I believe that people tend to deny a harsher reality. This can be seen in how people don’t expect poverty or racism in the US because of the ideals of freedom and opportunity on which our country is built, but it still exists. People are often surprised at the existence of racist groups such as the Neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan. Poverty is viewed as truly astonishing, especially by those who live in richer parts of the country/cities. I believe that, especially those living with more than others, often don’t expect for there to be as much hardship and poverty as exists in this country. Do you think that when people hear or see something questionable they automatically assume the worst? Do you think that this is healthy way of thinking?
I do think that it was somewhat fair for Kim to be assumed cheating; the fact that she got the highest possible scores on standardized tests, which is phenomenal, but unheard of. As teachers it was their responsibility to make sure that no cheating was going on in the school, and having Kim take an oral test on her material to make sure that her knowledge was her own was fair. In response to this, the entire class chimed, “they get in a crash”, or “the fly off the road”. This sudden display of negativity is astonishing, but in truth a knee-jerk response. The common modern culture seems to gravitate towards the assumption of the worst. Even the news tends to focus on the bad and unhappy, rather than the uplifting news. When people hear of something that has the potential for disaster, the bad options immediately jump into their head.
This way of thinking has both benefits and problems. This mindset can help prevent accidents and disappointment, as the negative outcome is already expected and assumed. However, this way of thinking does not allow for people to enjoy life and the world around them. It does not promote trust or fun experiences if we are only thinking about what could go
