American Sign Language (ASL) is almost a completely separate language, other than the words being used. It has its own grammar and word placement. A sentence in ASL usually will not make sense when literally translated. An interpreter must sign the subject before the action. “Talk louder do not” is the way an English speaker would say “Do not talk louder.” Just like a normal language, sign language differs in other countries based on their vernacular. ASL and SEE (Signed Exact English) are used in the United States. Juan Pablo Bonet wrote the first well-known book on the signed alphabet in 1620. In 1760, Deaf education was offered for free in a French school. In 1788, France published the first sign language dictionary. America soon caught on and offered Deaf education as well. Subsequently, the New York Institution for Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb was founded in 1818. Similar schools were created in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia in following years. In the 1850’s, the idea of a Deaf state was proposed to allow other Deaf people to interact within their own “kind” and not having to live up to hearing people’s expectations. It was denied. In 1890, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was founded. The invention of the electrical hearing aid classified some Deaf people as “hard at hearing”. Hearing aids, however, could not fix everyone’s hearing, so President Eisenhower established captioning for the Deaf around 1958. In 1965, the first “ASL Signs and Linguistics Dictionary” was published, and now it is 2013, and I hope to advance sign language further.…

The career that I chose to research was Middle School Education and Teaching. I chose this career because I have always liked going and being at school, I’ve always liked being able to learn new things, and be able to work and be with people every day. A teacher is an educator who provides education for students. Being a teacher can help students in many ways even out of the classroom. A middle school teacher normally teaches the grades sixth to eighth. The reason there is a middle school is to get the students prepared for harder classes in high school. A few things that a teacher does is prepare lessons, quizzes, and tests over the material that they learned. They can teach subjects anywhere from science, math, english, spanish, and any other courses that the school provides. Teachers prepare report cards, talk with the student's parents if needed. They also have to enforce rules and regulations and make sure all students follow them. Teachers don’t just teach they help students with their personal lives and help them grow up to be a better person in the world. Teachers provide and educate students on all core subjects and with learning life skills. A teacher’s work environment is normally…

John Krumboltz once said, “You have control over your own actions and how you think about the events that impact your life. None us can control the outcomes, but your actions can increase the probability that desired outcomes will occur. There are no guarantees in life. The only guarantee is that doing nothing will get you nowhere.” (Krumboltz, 46). In this short exert from his book titled Luck is no Accident, 10 Ways to get More out of Work and Life, Krumbolz discusses the importance of making the most out of opportunities that may seem little or pointless, and that happiness doesn’t depend on any external conditions, but instead, it is governed by our mental attitude. Throughout my life, I have only had a few jobs because I didn’t start working until I was almost 18, but I have always strived to have the best attitude when working. My first job ever was at Coldstone Creamery, and there were many times that I had to deal with people that were rude and inconsiderate. Krumbolz talks about controlling what you can, and letting go of what you can’t, which is exactly what I tried doing when working there and dealing with these kinds of people.…

Growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My whole world evolved around sports, but I knew the chances of making money playing a sport were slim. My father owns a pipeline business, and my mom owns a boutique shop so I knew I would go into a business management plan. At ten years old, my father always took me to work with him on the weekends. That was one of the best things I got; young experience is what I needed. He taught me to operate heave machinery, mix concrete, work on pipelines; moreover, he taught me what it takes to be a self-mannered, respectful employee. Since then, I knew what to do with my life and I am very lucky to have such inspirational parents to motivate me for my goal in life. I look up to them in so many ways and appreciate all they have done for my siblings and I. Hopefully, I can provide for my family like my father has for ours.…

The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. The road to a medical degree is one filled with thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to any other. Saving people’s lives on a day-to-day basis has been one of my dreams for as long as I can remember, so the rigorous curriculum and the competitive medical schooling is a fair trade for the lives I can save. Earning a medical degree comes along with demanding schooling, disciplined studying, and meticulous training, but in the end the degree is worth all the sacrifices.…

While I was in high school, I pondered about several different majors and careers I wanted to do in college. It was a very long, vigorous process deciding what I wanted to be the rest of my life until I came upon the perfusion program. This is a medical profession where they work in the hospitals during surgeries. Most of them can be on-call which means if you’re not working and there is an emergency you can be called in. The perfusion program is a four year program with your last year being all clinical.…
