“Pediatric nurses are Registered Nurses who care for children of all ages in a variety of healthcare settings”(SoPN). Pediatric nurses are one of the few nurses who look after children from the day they are born to their teenage years; therefore, these nurses tend to work in hospitals and clinics, give screenings and immunizations, and treat common illnesses of children such as chickenpox and tonsillitis. Also, they “make preliminary or final diagnoses of illnesses and injuries”(Every Nurse). For example, a pediatric nurse can diagnose a heart murmur in a newborn patient and get it checked by speaking with the operating doctor. To become a pediatric nurse you have to receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, take an exam called the National Council Licensure Examination to become licensed as a registered nurse, and possess good qualities.
BSNs usually take up to four years at a university to obtain and can sometimes take longer depending on whether an internship is attached. Some people take the opportunity to intern because it will give them more experience when it comes time to work in the field. For instance, a nurse who interned will have better experience than a nurse who is fresh into the field, so the nurse who interned will know how to function properly and accordingly in the setting. Those with a BSN, typically, get more job opportunities rewardingly earning higher pay. According to the Nurse Journal, hiring jobs want a candidate to have a BSN thirty-seven percent of the time and this is because candidates with a BSN are more educated in the field as mentioned before.
