Becoming A Therapist: Personal Narrative Analysis
Hey Jordan, I’m Seamus your new mentee. I know you said answering emails was on the three things you don’t like to do, but I thought I should introduce myself.
I’m a fourteen year old freshman and I go to Denver Online High School, I haven’t traveled much but I do like to camp and hike. I joined this program to try and get myself through high school and college because I would like to become a therapist.
I saw that you noted that you wanted a mentee in the LGBT community and someone who spoke Spanish or Portuguese, while I only speak english I’m LGBT.
I hope to meet you soon and have fun in Peru.

In Middle school, my classmates used to call me "The therapist" or the girl version of Dr.Phil. My reputation was the person everyone poured their hearts out to. Now it is a common perception that kids our age couldn’t possibly have problems. Now I can't speak for all, but for us kids growing up in Randolph and living with parents that survive from pay check to pay check, we had real problems. That we probably shouldn’t have had at such a tender age. Helping people always brought out a certain burst of happiness in me even though I barely knew how to deal with my own trials and tribulations.…

When I was asked to interview a Psychology Professor in order to get to know the Psychology Department better, and to broaden my knowledge in the field of Psychology, I was very excited. Psychology was never offered as a class at my high school, and all that I know about Psychology I learned from my mother. As much as I was very excited to get to know about Psychology and a Psychology Professor, I was a little nervous about meeting and talking with a professor who I had never met before. I built up the guts and courage and emailed Professor McIntyre and asked her if she would be willing to meet with me. She was delighted to meet with me, but could only interview over the phone because she needed to be home with her new baby girl. I would like…

A major theme in my life is improvement. I challenge myself to take risks and set high expectations for myself. For instance, I strive to run faster and for longer distances every couple of times I approach the treadmill belt. I am obstinate about my minimum distance, 2.2 miles, and my minimum speed, 6.8. A major component of improving myself is learning. Every new word is a miniscule enhancement of my massive English vocabulary pool, but it is still a step in the right direction. I enjoy becoming more knowledgeable in both domestic and international affairs. I wish I could have more time to pour into reading current event and health articles. I am particularly attached to drumming the latest scientific discovery or innovate biotechnology product…

My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…

Instead of going to the typical high school like my peers from middle school, I choose to travel 3-4 hours every day for a dual-enrollment program that challenges my mind and abilities every day. This fall, I will be attending University of California, Santa Barbara, under the Global Studies program. I will get a job to support my college education, and I will pursue internships, minors, and study abroad at every opportunity. I am going to become a diplomat through the U.S. Foreign Service, and I will explore the world, making change, helping people, and most importantly, gaining a broader insight of what makes the world tick. The more I travel, the more I will see, and as I learn I intend on using my knowledge to solve major problems and crises and leave the largest positive impact on the world I am capable of, with the help of those I…

Life can be a treacherous journey that even the toughest people have trouble making it through. No one, not even the greatest superheros can get through it alone. We all need some sort of mentor. Someone like Mr. Miyagi was to Karate Kid and Athena was to Odysseus. I am no different, a mentor’s job is to lead and guide you through whatever life throws your way. My mentor has done that and much more. Normally it seems most mentors either come from different ethnicities or cultural backgrounds but, not in this case. Me and my mentor share a ton of the same characteristics and traits. Although he is older and much more wiser, we are still close enough in age to experience and enjoy some of the same cultural activities. One of them being checking…

For my first psychosocial assessment, I met with a resident who had just completed an inpatient treatment program for alcohol abuse. Using my interviewing and facilitative skills I engaged him and learned about his life. Before completing treatment at the inpatient program, he was homeless, my main goal was to find out more about his family, and the series of events that led up to him becoming homeless. During our session, he shared that he had been using drugs and alcohol for over thirty years as a way to cope with his depression and suicidal ideations. His mental health issues stemmed from emotional abuse he endured as a child from his parents, which translated into adulthood. He currently has several strained family relationships, mainly…
