Immigrants and their assimilation into America is a long standing occurrence, with initial experiences by the Pilgrims of the early 1600s to the first documentation of mass immigration with the arrival of Catholic and Jewish immigrants, from Italy and Russia during the colonial era in the late 1800s to early 1900s. With this influx at the time being labelled as “New Immigration”, “Nativists feared the new arrivals lacked the political, social, and occupational skills needed to successfully assimilate into American culture” (Wikipedia). These historical concerns continue to evolve in modern debate of the pros and cons of immigrant assimilation, the conflicting interests of Immigrant and Nation, and examination of the meaning of the term “assimilation’…
According to the the article “Who’s Worthy if Immigrating Here?”, by George F. Will, there are about 80 million immigrants living in the United states. These 80 million people have created debates on whether they are Americans or if the really should be. The divided views on who is an American and what it should take to become a citizen shows what America is. The different views on immigration creates a lot of tension around the subject.…
The United States of America originally a nation of immigrants is rapidly becoming a nation of native born citizens. We have by now had an opportunity to produce the native-born individual someone we might label as an “American”. Today, the number of foreign-born persons in the United States is about 3,000,000 of the population, and about 5,000,000 of Americans are the children of immigrants. Due to the new Immigration Reform and Control Act the days of mass immigration are over, but the influence of the movement will never be eased. (Arun and Daniel p.1)…
In order to achieve "the American dream" and gain the American national identity, they obey all the fundamental beliefs of the cultural cornerstones, including learning English and finding job. As we notice that, the depictions of immigrants in the mass media fail to reflect truth of their attitude…
In today’s society, there are over thousands of different languages or dialects speak around the world. And because America is such a diverse country with many individuals capable of speaking two or more languages, they tend to forget the importance of speaking English in America. As an American living in America, it’s not important whether they speak English or not, but what’s important is which language they choose to represent themselves freely.…
What does it mean to be an “American”? To each individual person it means something very different. For the writer Bharati Mukherjee, who wrote the essay, “American Dreamer”, to be a true American someone has to want to be an American, not just prove that they merited citizenship. Her essay “American Dreamer” goes in depth into this idea and her opinion that as an American one should believe in bringing together the cultures in America. “We must think of American culture and nationhood as a constantly reforming, transmogrifying “we” (Mukherjee 438). For the author James Baldwin, who wrote the essay “Stranger in the Village”, an American is a person who is integrated with other cultures, and will never be a strictly “white” culture. “This world is white no longer, and it will never be white again.” (Baldwin 449) There are vast differences in the cultures of the world and to be integrated into a new culture can often be troublesome. These two essays have agreeing opinions on both of the authors’ predictions for the future of America and the refusal of the American culture to accept cultures other than their own, however they contrast with the authors’ own personal experiences in a culture other than their own.…
We have our share of chores around our apartment all the times. James and I like to clean from beginning to end and ask question about what ought to be cleaned first. We make sure to answer each other questions and be sure to know if each other is meeting the other expectations. Together we give each other clear direction in how we want areas to be cleaned with complete and thorough explanation.…
As a recent immigrant myself I see a great value in the programs like cultural orientation for the new members of our community. Ascentria provides services for people of various cultural and social backgrounds. Lack of knowledge about the peculiarities of American culture, social norms as well as the ways this society functions can not only put the newcomers in uncomfortable situations, but also compromise their safety and security. I believe it is critical to provide the people who are to make this country their new home with all the necessary information, which would help their adaptation and integration into the American society.…
Becoming Mexican American is George J. Sanchez’s document how Chicanos survived as a community in Los Angeles during the first part of the twentieth century. He goes into detail of how many thousands of Mexicans were pushed back in to Mexico during a formal repatriation. Those that survived in Los Angeles joined labor unions and became involved in New Deal politics.…
I think immigrants play an important role in America. They help build and strengthen America's economy. Immigrants help the economy by creating their own jobs. They work in all types of occupations. They are teachers, scientists, engineers, and construction workers. Every immigrant creates 1.2 local jobs for local workers, raises wages for native workers, and attracts native-born workers from elsewhere in the country. Overall, immigrants improve economy by creating their own business or working in difficult construction places. In addition to improving America’s economy, immigrants make the country more open-minded to new possibilities. America have diverse populations with different beliefs and culture. This means that opinions aren't limited…
People immigrating to America today face a lot of obstacles. For example it may be hard to find a job because they may not be a skillful speaker yet and will also be competing against the millions of Americans looking for jobs. In America there is a total of 4.9 percent of the population unemployed, that of which 7.2 percent are college degree owners. For a newcomer it has become more difficult job searching because many high end jobs that people go to college for have been taken, leaving those people with degrees having better resumes for low end jobs. Also If a foreigner has trouble with speaking English the job may also be more biased as in they may be seeking out more fluent speakers.…
In my childhood, I spent several months in a given year in Zaragoza. The day usually started just when the sun rose, with Mami Rosa and me feeding the chickens and I sitting at the kitchen table while Mami Rosa began to make breakfast for us, distinct aromas filled the kitchen of meat, frijoles, tortillas, and herbs. When breakfast was ready, usually my uncle or my aunt and cousin would join us, but other times it was the two of us. While eating our breakfast Mami Rosa told me of the news, she had heard about in town or what gossip was circulating in the village. Mostly I just listen to her voice and laughter that would bring a smile to my face.…
ur country is currently facing a time of uncertainty and forced to make decisions about some very controversial issues. Among these issues is the question of immigrants and their role in the United States. As congressmen, the people of your state voted for you to represent their voices in the national legislature. However, I encourage you to remember all the people who are underrepresented in our government and consider their opinions when forming policies for the United States. It is important to consider the role immigrants had in the formation of our country. The very basis our country was formed on the notion of the ‘American Dream’ where anyone can achieve anything. However, the currently policies being discussed deter the people who have…
The first challenge for immigrants is the language barrier. Since English is the second or third language for most immigrants, they face a lot of problems to communicate. Although, immigrants have some knowledge of English, the pronunciation of most words is different. So they can’t understand and communicate very easily. Furthermore, the accent of native speakers, Mexicans, Black Americans, and Chinese is different. This complicates the communication and creates stress for immigrants. For example, I came to the USA recently. I have some knowledge of English, but when I took my kids to the hospitals, go to shopping, and even when I was applying to this college, I found people who use different pronunciation and accent. Sometimes, I heard 50% to 90% of what people said and likewise they were not able to understand me, even though I was talking in English. As a result, “I’m sorry”, “say again”, “pardon” were my day to day words I used and heard for a couple of months. Therefore, language is the first big challenge that all immigrants face.…
