Education needs to be placed on the forefront, while athletics should come after, regardless of how good the athlete may be in his or her choice of sport. Unfortunately, this is a drawback for some athletes – having to maintain their eligibility. Some students maintain great grades during high school and possibly are awarded a scholarship to a school of higher learning so to speak. When all too often, the only reason they are awarded to go there is to play the sport they excel in. These actions can and will play an important part in the athlete’s future, if they do not have a back-up plan in academics. I remember not too long ago, a few high school graduates that were awarded scholarships to college to play football. I had asked one of the students what study they were majoring in. They said to me they did not know, they were going to be in home economics course to start. I think all too often, some colleges focus on the person as a whole. With this continually happening year after year, one would have to ask themselves how smart the children are in our society, or does it even matter as long as they can throw the ball seventy…

Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures.…
I interviewed Ben Cleveland, who is the head Athletic Trainer for Oklahoma Baptist University. Athletic Trainers are not technically a field in leadership studies, but this interview was very beneficial to be because I want to be an Athletic Trainer at the high school level. This interview just reassured me that being an Athletic Trainer is truly what I want to do with my life. Before talking about how Ben views leadership, one has to know and understand his background and where he is coming from. Ben is originally from Mobile, Alabama and earned his undergraduate in Science in Athletic Training from the University of Alabama soon after that he obtained a Master’s of Science in Physical Education at Florida State University. Ben started as an assistant athletic trainer at Trevecca Nazarene University for seven years before accepting the job here at Oklahoma Baptist University.…
As stated in my career timeline, my goal is to become an athletic director for a high school. I believe this job will provide myself with personal fulfillment that I would not achieve anywhere else. For this interview I reached out to a family friend that personally knows the interim athletic director at Gordon State College, Gary Sharpe. Before holding his current position, Mr. Sharpe spent ten years as an assistant baseball coach for Gordon State College. Prior to his collegiate career he served as the head baseball coach for Upson-Lee and coordinator for the Georgia Dugout All-Star Games. Needless to say that Mr. Sharpe has crucial sport management experience from working at the collegiate and high school levels.…
In the 1800s there was not a high demand for highly trained, educated and experienced athletic directors even though high school sports were expanding. It was not until the late 1890s that the state of Michigan initiated high school sports competition for boys and then the Michigan State Athletic Association was created for years after. This establishment sparked other states like Illinois, Indiana, and New York to create their athletic associations in the early 1900s (Schneider and Stier). By 1920 there was a national organization, consisting of five states, called the National Federation of State High School Athletic Association. Today, all states hold membership in this federation. Sports continued to expand, and the position of athletic…
An athletic administrator there are many student-athlete issues that will arise that athletic directors will need to be prepared for. The first issues I think that an athletic director would need to prepare to face are issues regarding the code of conduct. In conjunction with the school’s code of conduct, the athletics department code of conduct should be familiarized by all student-athletes and parents. All student-athletes should be accountable for his/her actions and should be enforced by the school principal and the athletic director. An athletics orientation will be held before the start of each academic school year stressing the importance of the school and athletics code of conduct. Athletic orientation should include the student-athlete and parents that will cover expectations, rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements, which lead me to my next issue that athletic directors may face.…
You are an Athletic Trainer. You are watching a local basketball basketball just in case anybody gets hurt. Then out of nowhere, a player hears a pop in his leg , and is going through a lot of pain. You spring into action and try to help the poor player. Will you get him back into action in no time or will his basketball dreams be ruined forever? As an athletic trainer, you will have a lot of responsibilities. Athletic Trainers help athletes maintain physical health by teaching them how to avoid injuries as well as by treating them. This career is in the medical science class and tasks include treating and preventing injuries, rehabilitating athletes, providing players with medical equipment.…
“If you’re a clock-watcher, this is the wrong job for you, according to Chelsea athletic director, Wayne Welton (Kalahar, 2011). Athletic directors (AD’s), who work countless number of hours daily, challenge this forward thinking or idea. Most taking on numerous roles day in and day out, only to find themselves with task incomplete of request unfulfilled. The role of the athletic director, specifically at the high school level, has changed due to an increased workload, leading to burnout, while on the colligate level, the changes in rules and regulations has seen the job transform drastically. AD’s…
As a coach I want to be the leader of a successful program who helps student athletes excel on and off of the field. I will do this by first hiring good assistant coaches around me who can help me bring my vision to reality. It will require dedication from the student athletes in the classroom and in practice and games to be the absolute best they can be in any situation. It will be up to me to instill in my athletes hard work and dedication in everything they do. So I will first need them to respect and maybe even fear me a little bit, but I still need to maintain a close enough relationship with them to where they can consider me a friend and be able to turn to me in any time of need. I will first stress the importance of hard work through drills and conditioning, but at the same time not make it feel like work for them; make them understand there is a reason for all of the things that we do on a daily basis. Once the team understands what it takes to play for me; maybe even some quit because they think it will be too hard, that's what I want; I don't want the weak ones who will give up on themselves and their teammates, only the strong will survive. Then you can evaluate each individual in every facade of the game and start to teach them in the areas that they are weak and strengthen their strengths. I want my team to be able to runs themselves without one coach needed at a practice or a game. Of course coaches will be there but by halfway through a season I want my team to run like a well-oiled machine not needing any coaches to tell them to do any specific thing. I will instill in my team self confidence that they can do anything, beat anyone, and achieve any goal that they set their minds on on any given day. I will teach about winning and losing, how to win and stay humble and how to lose and not have your confidence shaken to the point to where you struggle to perform. I will teach…
Leadership comes from the ability to make the wrong call, and athletes know this. We have all had to make a decision with no right choice, and sometimes we carry out the task and don’t get the result we have been trying to find, this causes us to be stronger and except we did all we can do. The athletes that can be leaders will be able to be more efficient in so many different aspects of life. Athletics create a sense of discipline that our generation is much in need of, and the more disciplined we become the better the world will turn out to be. Living in a world where our attention spans are shrinking and we are not able to adapt very well, the commitment we achieve through athletics can save us. Commitment is a combination of determination through discipline and knowing somebody relies on you. Athletics will teach the younger generation to withstand more difficult tasks. Athletes can be stronger people able to accomplish more without being broken down so easily, and that is why we need to start preswaying kids to join athletics, not be afraid of them, because in reality there’s nothing to be afraid of, the risk is greater outside of…
Most athletes have known that they wanted to advanced to the next level of athletics since they were younger. High school is the next step to furthering their career in the sport they have always dreamed about playing. High school athletes have to get the attention of college recruiters. To progress to the next level recruiters and college…
Along with administering health care, my main goal for working in this setting is to be a positive influence in students’ lives and give back to the community by making the athletes that I serve into leaders. Being a leader and equipping others with the ability to become leaders is a passion of mine. What many people fail to notice is that this is a crucial time for many students as they attempt to grow into adults and not all coaches and athletic trainers seize the moment to support them along their journey. I want to be able to make an impact on students’ lives and change their…
