Performance Characteristics:
Caliber possesses a significantly better eutectic point than that of beet juice. This translates to a greater melting capacity than that of beet juice.4
Environmental Characteristics:
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a measure of the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms living in a body of water to break down organic material in a given sample over prescribed conditions. It is a widely used as an indication of the organic quality of water. The BOD value is most commonly expressed in ppm (parts per million) and is often used as a robust surrogate of the degree of organic pollution of water.5
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is very similar to BOD. It also is used to measure organic compounds in water and is a useful measure of water quality. This test differs from BOD as chemicals are used to measure oxygen requirements in place of biological organisms. COD values are always larger than BOD values as COD ensures ALL organic material is broken down.5
In short, the lower the BOD and COD values of a chemical deicer, the less the product will affect the organic quality of water. Caliber deicers are yield significantly less BOD and COD values in comparison to Beet Juice.
Overall, Caliber blends yield better performance, are easier to handle, and have less of an environmental impact that beet juice.
