As he departed from his hometown, a close friend wrote him to inform him that it was Beethoven´s time to travel to Vienna to ¨receive Mozart´s spirit from Hayden´s hands.¨ So, he carried his admiration for both Franz Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, two important figures during the Classical era. Even before Ludwig´s brother Carl's death, Beethoven felt as if he had the duty to serve as Karl´s caretaker/father due to his mother´s ¨immoral ways¨ as he saw it. Beethoven, after he had finally won custody of Karl, forbade the boy to see his mother. The boy frequently defied him by running away to be with her. In fact, there was one occasion Beethoven had to have police officers escort the boy home after running away. Karl lived very unhappily with his uncle for a long time before leaving to become a student at the University of Vienna in 1824. Karl soon told his uncle Beethoven that he had plans to go into the military- which Beethoven did not take
