In “Hill Like White Elephants,” Jig is a young woman who must make an important choice in her life. More specifically, is whether she should have an abortion, that her partner wants her to have. The man feels that if Jig was to terminate the pregnancy, their life would a lot happier just like it was before. She begins to identify her current situation with the white hill, by referring it to an elephant.

Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned,” the main character Steven is a fast running racing dog. Throughout the story, he expressed different feelings on several things. The main thing Steven loves is running almost anywhere, mainly in the woods. Steven did not really like various humans, in the story he wanted to do away with them all except the thin twins. However, his friends are different matter, it is where he loves them all. In the woods, Steven have a contest with Edward, a bull terrier. Edward falls in the opening and Steven triumphs the race. Susan and Steven have a friendly competition in the woods one day. Undoubtedly, Steven wins this race as while, Susan broke her leg by falling into the gap. Squirrels that tends to be at the races mocks the dogs when they would hurt themselves. Franklin kills one of the squirrels for mocking Susan after the fall into the gap that broke her leg. Susan’s injury made Steven stop racing for about ten days and it rained too. The race with Franklin was Steven last race for Steven hit his head and died. Steven was at the bottom of the lake for six days, after that he wakes up.
The main characters in both stories was running for their own personal reasons.
The man in “Hill Like White Elephants,” he was running from responsibility, commitment, or even marriage. It shows how he feels when he stated,” It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig,” he also said “It’s not an operation at all (43).” On the other hand, Jig sees things differently as she sat and waited for the train. The hill like white elephants, an unwanted pregnancy that she eventually wanted. She begins to feel like they are on different paths. Steven, who probably was a bull dog or a golden retriever was thrown into the river at age six months. He is happy along as he can run and out running is the best thing in his life. At the end, he drowned in a lake and awaken to buttercup hills. This is a place with no one around and he can just run for miles. Steven saw the sun as God because the Sun was always everywhere to
