Being A Peer Tutor
This semester and peer tutor has been great. I have had the chance to be with two students, Keenan and Steven. The importance of being a peer tutor is to give the students support in their classes. Guide them through their work. Also just to be an example of good behavior, hard working skills, and social skills. There are more things of why it is important to be a peer tutor but those are just the basic ones. But doing all of these things for the student is what makes a difference in their lives. Another reason that it makes a difference in their lives is because sometimes children with disabilities have trouble socially. But with their peer tutors the students can talk to them when they see them at lunch and other places around the school. I also think that the students need to be …show more content…
Like I said earlier was that I love to walk by and see them with their happy faces all the time it just brightens my day. In 7th grade I would just see them and not know their names. But now i know who they are and I think they are some of the neatest people I know. On the downside of being a peer tutor I didn't really like all of the projects. The only one I actually found interesting was the R-word poster. I liked that because I was able to go online and read the stories on the website. Being a peer tutor was a little challenging. In my opinion the worst parts were when your student just did not want to cooperate at all. They just wanted to free draw or go back to class. So we kind of had a little moment but in the end it was all okay. I found this challenging because like I said I think they are the neatest people I know, so it's hard to argue with them a little. I don't want to hurt their feelings. But I know it is part of helping them. I really enjoyed this class and I feel like now I am better at handling situations. I also am more comfortable around people who have

During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…

I primarily helped teach other students various algebra 1 concepts along with geometry when I could. Being a Freshman tutor, I was limited to those I was able to help but I was able to tutor several students a week and it also helped me reteach myself older concepts I had forgotten. Tutoring for math was a great opportunity for me to aid my classmates and expand others’ understanding of…

“I think the American Dream says that anything can happen if you work hard enough at it and are persistent, and have some ability. The sky is the limit to what you can build, and what can happen to you and your family.”-Sandford Wall. The American is defined as the traditional ideals such as equality, democracy, and prosperity that serve as a common foundation for the people of the United States. In literary workings such as Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Great Gatsby, “The Necklace”, and “The Road Not Taken”, the authors prove that the American Dream is attainable due to the fact that many America’s are successful in acquiring independence, economic prosperity, and finding love.…

The four most important aspects of my role as a peer tutor would be showing leadership, communication, flexibility and having a positive impact on students. Each of these aspects are important and all contribute to my role as a peer tutor, without any of them I don't think I would perform as well in the classroom. Showing leadership and having a positive impact on others have changed over the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester my leadership skills weren't as inclined as they currently are. Over the course of the semester, I have gained confidence and demonstrated leadership and initiative while peer tutoring. Also, I saw a change in how students approached me; they are presently more comfortable asking me questions in…

Every week at a nearby elementary school, I tutor children from kindergarten to sixth grade as a part of their YMCA after school care program. Typically, I work with the same group of students to finish their math homework, work on a project for social studies, or help them sound out new words. By watching them thrive in a positive environment and develop a love for learning, they constantly teach me new things. After being at school all day and dealing with ample amounts of stress, their innocent and bright minds cause me to ground myself and realize what is at the core of all of my hard work in academics: a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps the most rewarding thing has been witnessing them improve dramatically, such as being able to read a word with ease that we sounded out multiple times the previous week, with a smile on their face and a new sense of confidence and accomplishment. Steadfastly teaching them that by working hard and not giving up they can reach their goals, it leaves me with such a proud feeling when I see them putting it into action. Tutoring has been a two-way street: the children have impacted my life in a positive and meaningful way just like I have impacted…

Yes, last week was really difficult for me! I'm pursuing my degree in nursing through Arizona College and doing my prerequests through Keiser University, so I was able to take advantage of the free tutoring available at Arizona College. I put my kids in daycare for the week and I was at the Arizona College campus from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. studying and being tutored. I feel that I understand the concepts that we are studying each week, however the math portion is what I'm having a hard time with since I havent taken a math class in about ten years. I feel that I'm able to do the problems but they are taking me a long time to complete and since the time frame for the test is fifty minutes I run out of time and I'm left guessing on some of the…

I have had the chance to serve as a tutor, a peer advisor, and as a teaching assistant for a variety of courses while I was an undergraduate and in my current role as an AmeriCorps VISTA. Through these positions, I had to chance to lead class periods and I have found that I enjoy teaching at the university level, as compared to the times that I have helped with elementary and middle school classes. I fully enjoy seeing students finally understand a concept they have had trouble with and connecting students with their passion. Watching them take that spark and ignite it into something much larger than themselves has been one of the most rewarding…

I was a nervous wreck before my Teach Live experience. I did not know what to expect, and I was hoping that I would nail my teaching. Needless to say after my experience, I was so relieved, and I loved Teach Live. I loved it so much that I asked if I could do it again. I have learned that I will not be a perfect educator, but I hope to do my best. Some things I did not know what to say to the students, but I figured it out. I also learned that I am going to love teaching mathematics. The students in the classroom were great. I also learned to look at the students, instead of the wall. I also learned to stay calm and involve all the students. I am sure once I get into the field at high schools I will learn even more about myself.…

I was babysitting with three other high schoolers and I was told that there are normally more kids that attend but the night that I was helping there was only four kids. There was a dinner before and they had spaghetti and cookies along with milk or juice. It smelt really good but I had practice before so I was not able to attend the dinner. I did end up getting a cookie and that was really good. After the dinner when the meeting started we were able to go into a teachers room and play with the toys or stay in the gym and shoot hoops or run around. The little girls decided they wanted to go into the room and I was more than happy to go in there and play games. Girls are normally more my thing. Nathan came with and helped, we played hangman on the board and “house” that didn't last very long. One of the girls wanted to play “teacher” so she gave me and Nathan a spelling test and by that time it was time to go. I had a lot of fun playing with the little girls. I took one-two hours out of my night to help the parents of the kids so they could focus on the meeting and not worry about what their kids were doing in another room. When I was little my mom was in PTO and I still remember when high schoolers came to help and I hope they remember when they are my age. Knowing that I was making a difference made me want to realize the importance of helping the…

Through the course of five weeks I have tutored a third grader by the name of Willy one hour each Thursday. Willy is a high-spirited kid who loves to learn. He goes to a school named Corpus Christi, a school I spent my sixth through eighth grade years at, and is also the organization I volunteered for. I chose this particular work because I love working with kids considering I have 4 younger brothers and sisters. This also gave me an opportunity to put my knowledge to good use and to be a good role-model towards Willy. What I gained from this experience is satisfaction from helping a young student cope with his academic struggles and learn to surpass them in order to be successful. I most definitely would do this project again if I had the chance.…

In my opinion being a tutor is more than helping a busy college student complete a homework assignment or studying for an upcoming exam. You can offer much more to someone struggling when you have experienced what they are going through. Many college students hold part-time jobs, take several credits, and get very few hours of sleep which leave them stressed and overwhelmed. When students come to me for tutoring I don’t just complete the assignment and send them on my way. I ask them what they need help with, what their course load is like, how much work they do outside of school and what else they have going on that could be making their education more complicated than it needs to be.…

I am very eager to make it myself but at the same time bring all my peers up along with me. In order to make it big, you’ll often need assistance from others. I think the first step to help anyone is to support him or her. People need to hear that they have people backing them and standing by their side. I think the biggest deterrent of tackling anything is fearing that no one else thinks you can do it. If no one else thinks you can do it, you’ll often start questioning yourself and doubting your abilities. People need to hear that they can do it, it’s a mental thing. The mind is a very powerful thing.…
