An average day for Veterinarians includes many challenging tasks that involve both animals and the animal’s owner. “Veterinarians work around forty-five to fifty hours in a week not counting being on call” (Orray 1). To start of the day, veterinarians begin by assessing any hospitalized patients.Throughout the day veterinarians typically treat and dress wounds for animals along with vaccinating them for diseases (“Veterinarians” 2). A common task for veterinarians is performing surgery on animals in need of being spayed or delivering babies. Aside from your typical veterinarian, Research Veterinarians investigate problems and create strategies for new technology involving animal treatment. “Some veterinarians even collaborate with other physicians and public health agencies to help prevent animal-spread diseases” (“So, you” 8). These diseases include malaria, Ebola, and avian influenza. According to many professionals in the field of Veterinary Medicine, the hardest task they will ever have to perform is euthanizing animals when needed (“Veterinarians” 2). This is especially heart breaking when the animal is put down due to financial reasons. In normal cases, euthanizing an animal includes giving the animal a shot of pentobarbital which is commonly used for seizures. Veterinarians have a promising outlook which in turn leads to a promising career. In fact, the employment rate for veterinarians is predicted to grow nine percent by the year 2024. The state of Hawaii has the greatest outlook according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest percentage of employment growth is seen in food and animal safety which involves preventing food contamination from animals and various other species (“Veterinarians” 6). Aside from the outlook, there are many opportunities to advance in this field. “Veterinarian schools can train their students for positions in other occupations such as public health, disease control, corporate sales, and population studies” (“Veterinarians” 6). For example, Veterinarians have many opportunities to extend their knowledge to others by teaching at schools or colleges who offer courses in animal science. Aside from teaching, veterinarians also have the opportunity to get their board certification which can lead to better income and security within their job. Getting a private practice is also seen as a prestigious step that is a result from many years of experience (“So, you” 2). There are many advancements in the career itself.
