Being an Optimistic Person
Optimistic Person

What does optimism mean? Basically, it means focusing on the positive aspects of life. I consider myself to be an optimist because I always hope and expect events and plans, and everything surrounding me to turn out well, and that I look with a smile, positive attitude on the future.

I’m absolutely sure that being optimistic is a lot better than being pessimistic. In my opinion, pessimism is disastrous. It ruins hope and possibilities. If a person is pessimistic, he doesn’t hope for a better future and doesn’t anything towards achieving his goal.

When the pessimistic person encounters obstacles along the way, they seem enormous to him, and he doubts his ability and is therefore unwilling to overcome them. In the long run, he will just stay where he is, and won’t make any progress in his life. People can waste years, even their whole lives, because of pessimism. (Latumahina, 2007).

Seeing only the negative aspects of any situation can cause the person to miss opportunities, neglect problems that need to be solved, and fail to take action that would otherwise improve his relationships and quality of life.

I also think that it is impossible for a person to have a totally smooth and happy life; he will always face difficulties, frustrations and dissatisfactions in his life. When encountering frustration, if one can keep an optimistic, confident and open-minded outlook, like myself, he will be able to change an ordinary, boring life into a rich one full of bright and positive emotions, a difficult life into a relaxed one and even the suffering into beautiful and precious experiences.

Being optimistic doesn 't mean waiting for things to happen by themselves. It means expecting the best, believing that the best will happen, but at the same time making decisions, following them, acting and making things happen.

From my personal experience I can give you some advice why being an optimist is always better than being a pessimist.

My brother, Ramez, is the definition of the word optimist. An optimist is a person who holds the belief that good ultimately outweighs evil in the world. Firstly, Ramez attempts to look at every situation on the brighter rather than the darker side. If he were to be robbed, he would say something along the lines of “at least I was not killed”. If one were to be completely failing at a hobby, assignment, career choice or having a mid-life crisis, Ramez would find a way to make it appear as if it is not the worst thing to happen and that a positive artifact has somehow come out of the negative situation. Now, this is a moderately beneficial characteristic to have in a person, for optimists will always be able to bring ones and their selves’ spirits…

So how is hopefulness and optimism related? Both terms are positive. Both terms are wonderful motivators. Hope is a dream and optimism makes the dream come true. Hopefulness is the emotion or feeling that keeps a person going and striving for, whatever it is that an individual wants (Peterson, 2000). Optimism is hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something (“Dictionary.com”, 1995). Some researchers feel that optimism differs from hopefulness in that optimism has a proactive component called planning. When contrasting hopefulness and optimism, optimism is usually based on logical concrete facts, for example statements like “I hope that the economy will improve” and “I am optimistic that the economy will improve”. The first statement can be made with no basis of fact or evidence to support it. We can be hopeful for anything at any time. The second statement however, communicates more confidence, optimism is usually based on evidence that can be judged or evaluated in terms of rational criteria (Snyder, 2000). Hopefulness and optimism are dissimilar in that hopefulness is situation specific and subject to change upon one’s own abilities. Optimism is an altogether elucidatory term that positive things will occur free of one’s capacity to do something.…

But hey, just look on the bright side. I mean it’s always darkest before the dawn. If you dream it, you can do it. Watch. No? Oh well. America today is decidedly and unwaveringly optimistic, we are positive thinkers. Positive thinking is defined by one of its leading advocates, Dr. Charlene Proctor as “the process of choosing positive emotions to create an outlook that translates into a new or better-chosen reality.” In short, our thoughts and attitude can affect the course of the outside world, so we should strive to be positive to reap positive outcomes, while stifling negativity for the opposite reason. We praise the optimist while shunning the pessimist. But the question is does every cloud have a silver lining? In order to show positive thinking as the dangerous paradigm that it is we will first examine the causes of positive thinking, move onto its effects, and then finally round out with solutions.…

Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…

In Optimism and Physical Health, there was a study conducted to find out the relationship between optimism and physical health outcomes. According to their findings, the data suggests that optimism is a significant predictor of physical health. I would have to agree with this study and I find it validating. One thing that I found interesting in the article was the significance of pessimism and physical health. We learned from the study that optimism can have a positive effect on physical health but we also learn that pessimism can have a negative effect on physical health. According to the article Optimism and Physical health, “It may well be the case that it is the presence or absence of pessimism that is important in determining physical health outcomes rather than the presence or absence of optimism”(p.247). What this is telling me is that having the presence of pessimism can have a more negative effect on physical health rather than the positive effect optimism has on physical health. To summarize, “In general, it is clear from this review that optimism is related to physical health. It is also clear that the link between optimism and health is stronger for subjective health outcomes than for objective health outcomes” (p. 248). This study really shows this information and it can be said that for future…

To be optimistic about something means to be hopeful and confident about it. The word optimistic can be applied to several things. Such as; a person, an idea, and to me, our Nation's future. When someone is optimistic about something, the person, idea, or thing usually means something to them, and America's future means something to me. It means a great deal to me because I live in a place where I have the freedom to make my own choices, have an opinion, and to worship our mighty God whom I love and serve . America also means something to me because it is a country that is worth fighting for. I am reminded every day of all the troops that have fallen and i am also reminded of the dedicated military that works so hard to make our home a better place. I am able to put all of my trust into my country's future and I will forever remain optimistic about it. There are so many reasons why I am so optimistic but a few reasons stand out to me. The three that stand out to me are because of the potentially strong upcoming generation, because of America's ability to stand back up after being defeated, and because of the knowledge and footsteps our past great leaders have left us.…

Throughout life we are confronted by many difficult situations however, how we deal with these situations will either enhance or deteriorate our physical and psychological health. When someone is optimistic they expect the most positive outcome possible under all circumstances. According to University of Phoenix, Positive Psychology, (2009), “optimism is an individual disposition or trait and an explanatory style describing how people characteristically interpret the causes of bad events in their lives”. Optimists are less likely to develop illness produced by stress such as anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular disease. Optimism reduces stress…
