Homelessness is something that can affect anyone at any given moment. There are many reasons why a person can experience being homeless. In this paper I will talk about some of the many ways people become homeless and why, I will also tell a personal story as well. Some of the most common reasons for a person to become homeless are poverty from a lack of jobs at competitive living wages, lack of affordable housing and inadequate housing assistance, lack of affordable health care, and domestic violence. The breakdown of my perfect but not so perfect life started when i was 13 years old. I discovered that my mother was on drugs she was using cocaine. Which at this point answer a lot of my questions like why do we have a padlock on our door every month, why is the phone bill never paid, and why is the cable always off. At this time I was fully responsible for my little sister I had to get her up for school (luckily we went to the same school), do homework with her, and get her ready for the next day. At this point i could see that my mother was always moody and I know now its because she couldn’t satisfy her addiction. One day my sister didn’t go to school with me and that same day I went home to an empty house, no mom and no sister and they were nowhere to be found. About a month later I received a call from my mother she stated that she and my sister was fine and that they were in a shelter. For about a year I felt like my mother was trying to turn her like around, so I moved back in with my mother. That wasn’t a good idea because she lost her house and my daughter and I had to go into a shelter. I can honestly say going into the shelter was the best choice for me because I work a full time job and I’m her at Harcum
