Being Present Without Being Present: Play Analysis
Isolated: Being Present Without being Present Looking around me as I stand in line, I see people who are engrossed by their phones. At one point in my life, I remember talking to strangers in line and getting to know a little about them. Now, all I see are people who isolate themselves while trying to connect with those who are not with them. To explain how technology like social media affects relationships, I will use examples from the play, examples from my own experiences, and I will share how my own opinion is informed by the play. The play has several references to technology isolating people from the present. For example, after Jean and Dwight wake up, the phone rings and Jean cannot seem to keep herself from answering the phone. Dwight tells her “Don’t get that,” but Jean insists that “[it will] just take a second.” This phone takes her out of the moments she experiences due to feeling the need to answer when the phone rings. Another example of how technology can affect people is when Jean describes how she “never had a cell phone” because “when everyone has their cell phone on, no one is there. It’s like people are “all disappearing the more [they are] there.” The irony of this example is …show more content…
I loved to play sports, hide and seek, house, and jump on the trampoline. However, once my parents allowed me to make a Myspace, I became obsessed. I did not play outside as much, and I constantly checked my account. I became isolated from my friends when I was on social media. Then, I got an iPhone which allowed me to be on social media anywhere I went. This constant presence of connecting with people through technology isolated me from the world surrounding me. Today, whenever I am not in class or studying, I am on social media. This obsession has taken me away from getting to know people and has put me further into my introverted

Too much attention is given to our desire to never be alone with our own thoughts in this day and age. This in turn leads people to have no sense of self unless it is somehow justified through our social interactions. We, as people, have gone from the thought focused on in the romantic era, and best quoted by Clive Hamilton, “He may have put his neighbors off, but at least he was sure of himself. Those who would find solitude must not be afraid to stand alone”, to the notion that being alone means you suffer from some kind of social, or anxiety disorder; and it is this kind of thinking that fuels our addiction to social networking. Youths do not want to go a single day without updating their statuses on Facebook to alert their peers to exactly what they are doing. Adults provide young children with their first catalyst into technology by being too busy to spend time with their child and introducing them to television from the time they are in diapers. In conclusion, us, humanity, society, and even as individuals, have lost what it truly means to be just that, an individual, and I fear that if something is not done to relinquish the control electronics have on our daily lives we will end up as socially neurotic, constantly anxious, sociopaths that…

Technology is hurting people intellectually and socially. Technology influences people to be more isolated because people can now just communicate over social media instead of actually talking face to face. People are beginning to become too dependent on technology. For example, technology is used for maps, socialization, shopping, and even books. People are becoming so attached to technology because they can do literally anything with it. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Montag’s wife, Mildred became so attached to her television set and her “family” that she completely lost her love for her husband. The empty void in her heart is filled with her television and radio. When Montag is describing how technology has made him isolated, he states, “I cannot talk to my wife. She listens to the walls” (Bradbury 78). Mildred became so dependent and attached to her tv that it is the only thing she cares about, even more than her husband. She became so connected with her tv’s and radios that she does not even listen to her husband when he is talking to her. Technology completely took over her life to the point where she became intensely isolated, much like what is happening to people…

Everyday people get messages or emails on their phones that they must check to keep in touch with their everyday lives. But most of the time people are using their appliances at dangerous times just because they need to be up to date with every single thing going on around them. Using electronics at terrible times has led to many accidents, “Every year, thousands of pedestrians are injured as they walk in cities. Some researchers say 1 out of 10 of those injuries are caused by a distracting mobile device such as a phone or portable music player”( “Hello Barbie, Goodbye Privacy?”). People are using devices at wrong times and getting hurt because of it. They cannot look away from their phone because there is a whole other world in their hands. Appliances are wanted by all generations, but are not necessary. Similarly, in Fahrenheit 451 the characters are addicted to screens and cannot look away from them for even a minute, " 'Will you turn the parlour off?' he asked. 'That's my family' "(Bradbury 46). Mildred is so connected to the television that she calls it her family and will not look away from it for any amount of time. She is such an addict that she cannot turn it off. The society Bradbury has created is not healthy for people of any age or any style. He proves that automation is hurting us…

The figures, 1 and 2, show the relationship of Bovine Serum Albumin concentration and Absorption of light at 595 nm. Figure 1 shows the standard curve of Raw Data and figure 2 shows the standard curve- Corrected Data. Bovine Serum Albumin or BSA was weighed and dissolved in water to achieve a certain stock concentration. Water was used as a diluent. Quantitative dilutions of this stock were performed to achieve the indicated concentration, from 0.0 to 10.0 μg/μl, of BSA in a final volume of 25.0 μl. The concentration of BSA is shown in ‘X-axis’. The absorption of light by each concentration at a wavelength of 595 nm was determined with a spectrophotometer. The absorbance Values of each concentration is shown in ‘Y-axis’. From the both figures, we can notice that as the concentration level of BSA increases absorbance value at wavelength of 595 nm also increases.…

In a recent study conducted by Matthew Brashears of Cornell University, 2,000 adults were asked the number of friends whom they share a close relationship with. The average response was 2.03 and it decreased from a similar study from 1985, which received an average response of three close friends (Silard. “From Face-to-Face to Facebook”). It is proven that humans thrive on human interaction, so cutting that face-to-face off could damage humans negatively by causing them to suffer more health problems due to physical inactivity and no interaction. “People who, like the Facebook COO, claim that we have never been so connected with each other are missing a vital point: the people making all these "connections" through the Internet and social media are, in the non-virtual plane sometimes referred to as "reality," sitting alone in front of a pixelated screen.” (Silard.). Even though we are able to interact with different of people from around the world, we become isolated from the people around us. People cut off their friends and family and would rather spend time on the…

Technology over the years have improved in drastic ways over the centuries and are getting more involved in our daily lives some in good ways but some are bad. Technology has cut off the way humans interact and speak distracting them from doing basic things like talking, cutting off any social interactions hiding behind a screen. People stop talking to their families, when they do talk they feel very uncomfortable and out of place. Ray Bradbury shows examples of technology getting in the way in his book Fahrenheit 451. Ray shows the readers how the power of technology does affect people in many ways in his book how it suppresses and replaces true human interaction.…

(Subclaim 1) Though cell phones can actually cause isolation, cell phones simplify our lives and social media allows people to connect with each other and express themselves on a new platform.(Evidence 1) Our phones simplifies the mundane parts of our lives. As early as just 25 years ago, if you wanted to find directions you’re lost, you had to spend about twenty minutes looking for directions on a map. You wanted to find a piece of information? You had to sort through hundreds of pages on a big, bulky encyclopedia. Or even if you wanted to call your friend to hang out later, you had to go out and find a payphone. Our phones have allowed us to do all these things in an instant at the touch of a button. A researcher at Harvard University says…

All the time you see people’s eyes glued onto their phones and drowning the whole world out. People get so distracted from technology and they don’t really care about what’s going on around them, people tend to grow distant from people. When you go somewhere just look around, everybody has their phone or some other device in their hands, and if it’s not in their hands it’s near them. Americans are so attached to technology that it literally drives us away from families/friends. In the 1920’s this wasn’t a problem at all. They didn’t have the high technology that we have today but they still had phones and it didn’t cause them to grow distant from people. They would still go out and have a good time. But today, if you can’t have your cell phone with you, it’s like the end of the world. in the article “Smartphone Dependency: A Growing Obsession With Gadgets”, the writer says, “For others, being away from their phone will almost certainly cause separation anxiety.” This truly shows how attached americans are to their…

Parents believe that children should have a cellphone because there could be emergency and they are able to check up on their children. It is a great concept to instill when it comes to raising children, but phones now a days are designed to have thousands of applications, send messages, facetime, listen to music, and etc. This causes children and teenagers to become wrapped up in technology to the point they would rather be on their phones than to go outside and play with their friends. Whether it be facebook, instagram, twitter , pinterest , tumblr , or snapchat . Social media is another phone. It is how we connect. In this day and age it is almost a part of life. Many people prefer to speak to a person over the internet as opposed to speaking over the phone or go and meet up with the same person. NBC news did a coverage on this issue. In their article they stated that “Many kids don’t understand the basics of simple conversation…with so much communication happening online or via text, kids have few opportunities to see manners and good communication in action, and even fewer chances to practice.” (McCready, Amy “Don’t Let Technology Rob Kids of Social Skills” pg 1). Social skills are pivotal to a person’s success in life. Without them it will be very arduous to build trusting relationships with others. If a person does not know how to approach unexpected situations in a work environment it will be very difficult for them to maintain a job . Another benefit of social skills is that if you know how to interact with others you can be happier. Great interpersonal skills could give you the confidence to discuss your ideas clearly with others. In addition to this if you can socialize with others you will be more comfortable going out to social events such as dinners , parties , ceremonies , carnivals , or even amusement…

In “Will They Call Us ‘Generation Isolations’?,” Diane Schmitt explains that modern technology’s impact on people’s social interaction or lack there of seems to be a mixed bag. According to Schmitt, mobile phones and social networking websites have been some researches suggesting that there is indeed a correlation between use of Internet, video games, and MP3 palyers and reduced face-to-face interaction. For instance, in one study, about 10 percent of who spent more 5hours online had fewer social interactions. The author describes more people live isolated nowadays than the previous generation. On the other hand, the author point out that the latest technology can encourage people to have more social relations. A research tells that people…
