Being the Mother of a Black Child

Mr. Moore:
On Saturday February 5, 2013 we organized a birthday party of my brother and all his college friends were invited. I chose to arrange a party in your restaurant as I heard the food service at your place is authentic and the food is tasty but for my surprise the food served was pathetic.
Initially, the guests were supposed to get soup as starter but the starter didn’t come till the dinner time. The guests were upset. After telling the waiters for several times finally we got the soup served to the guests but for my shock it was cold and tasteless. It was my brother’s 20th birthday and we were in very high spirits to enjoy the day with his friends and some of my family members but because of the food everything was ruined.
The dinner served was also cold and they could not serve the dishes which we had ordered 2 days before hand so that there were no confusions. But the manger seemed ignorant about the whole episode and I felt humiliated in front of my guest. Even my brother was really unhappy about the whole function. We ordered both non vegetarian and vegetarian food but they did not provide us with vegetarian dishes. Some of the guest had to leave without food.
The only good thing about your restaurant was the customer service as the waiters were very patient and were listening to all our complaints. I am very disappointed with the food provided at Sonny’s birthday gathering and hope that in future you will maintain good standards. I think you own my entire dinner party a free meal. If you need to contact me you can do so at 843-342-7593 between the hours of 10 am and 7pm.

Sincerely,

Your

With all the confined spacing for the families, you can tell there was a lot of tension between everyone. The food they had made for us to eat was not in our culture at all. “The Caucasian servers were thinking that the fruit poured over rice would make a good desert. Among the Japanese, of course, rice is never eaten with sweet foods, only with salty or savory foods.” (pg.20) On top of the food being served wrong, their latrines were not very useable. “The smell of it spoiled what little appetite we had.” (pg.31) “My mother was a very modest person, and this was going to be agony for her, sitting down in public, among strangers.” (pg.32). What some of the other women did was drag in a big cardboard carton and put up as walls so no one could see.…

The ones who were able to get seated, didn’t get their food fast enough. So they were displeased. As I observed all customers were no happy. One person at each table were aggravated and it showed on their face. The workers were very nice and pleasant. They would greet and take care of everyone apparently and promptly. When I would look into each of the relationships of each table, I would learn how a son and mother got along. I saw how he cared for her and how well he took care of her. Their nonverbal messages let me know what their relationship was and gave me reassurance that there are great children out…

The waiter was a kind lady, who immediately gave my dad and I good-looking bread. When I put the bread into my mouth, an explosion of buttery, juicy bread excited my taste buds. It was only a couple minutes in, and I already liked the food. When the waiter came back, my dad had asked the waiter what were some good appetizers to devour on. She stated that the papa rellena, tamal en hoja, and tostones rellenos were good foods to try. I was curious why she chose these three, but when they came and I put them in my mouth, I understood why. They each had their own unique taste, with the papa rellena being my favorite one. It was so interesting and tasty how they stuffed beef into a potato. For the main course, I decided to try something different and amusing. I ordered a rabo encendido, which is the tail of an ox. Even though it sounds disgusting, it was surprisingly good, with a soft, beefy-like taste to it. My dad ordered arroz con pollo, which when arrived at our table was like a mountain of rice. I must say that for the first time in my life, I didn’t have room for desert. In the end, my dad and I brought boxes of left over Cuban food home, both agreeing that the food was worth the price.…

Second, we had a very talkative and rude waitress. When we first sat down we waited almost 30 minutes just to get our drinks and appetizer put in. On top of getting our drinks late, we had to keep asking for refills. I don’t expect a waitress to keep all drinks completely filled, but when every drink at a table is completely dry, I would think they would need a refill. Paying almost $2.00 for a drink is ridiculous enough, so I try to get what my money is worth. Also on top of all of that, our waitress kept talking to the other table near us while standing at our table. I would have rather not had a waitress and have done it all myself.…

Stated is what I observed: • During the whole time that I was observing, no workers came up to me • I observed that out of all the sauces provided in the sauce bar, creamy garlic was the most popular • All sides were made before customers arrived and were arranged in the middle of the kitchen in metal tubs. This could be for easy access and faster serving time. • Why did customers prefer sitting down and eating at the restaurant rather than ordering to go? • Why did a majority of customers come in groups rather than alone? • I observed two interviews that occurred in the restaurant, one with a girl who seems young, maybe a teenager, and one with an older lady, maybe in the late…

Before I began preparing the child’s lunch I ensured that I followed the placement policy which state that before meals “”all tables used during mealtimes were cleaned before the children could be seated”. I also made sure that my own hands were washed and then I cleaned the children’s hands with wet wipes. Before sitting the children down a member of staff made me aware of the child’s dietary requirement and that he wasn’t allowed beef.…

The main character becomes very embarrassed when Robert comes over, since their cultures have such differences. Amy describes the scene and it was evident she was not excited about how her family was acting: “Dinner threw me deeper in despair” (Tan 185). Her mother was cooking large shrimp called Prawns, some slimy codfish, and squid. Amy was worried about what Robert’s family was going to think of their strange food. The minister’s family was American, so they are used to the simple ham and pudding meal. The families got together to sit down for the meal and Amy got even more embarrassed and ashamed then before. Her family was acting like they would normally do but in the American culture they don’t act anything like that. Her mother sets the plates on the table and their family digs in with their personal chopsticks. During the meal, the minister’s family showed their cultural traditions when Amy said: “Robert and his family waited patiently for platter to be passed to them” (Tan 185). They were not used to just serving themselves whenever they wanted. Usually they pass the plates and take turns. The situation got even stranger for Robert when Amy’s dad belched very loud at the end of the meal. He explained to Robert that they are supposed to show satisfaction at the end of eating and that is his way of doing so. Obviously that is not part of the…

    Racial-Ethnic Mothers

A prominent difference between the three groups of racial-ethnic mothers historically is that while African-American mothers were often encouraged to form families to increase the slave labor force, Chinese women were prohibited from starting families in America by law and also because they were often left behind in China. In contrast to African-American mothers, who experienced a somewhat egalitarian division of labor in the home, Chinese mothers often performed all domestic work because of the split household family system, and Mexican-American mothers also took on most of the domestic work.…

Earlier this evening, I took my family of two sons out for dinner, and we were contemplating whether or not to go do Papa John’s or Domino's for pizza. We ultimately decided to go to Papa John’s due to previous visits being satisfying, but this time, we did not feel the same about the pizza and the employees. We waited for an hour for our pizza to come, the waiter was extremely rude and ignorant, and the pizza did not taste nor look like pizza. My family and I deserve a full refund and an apology for what had occurred at your restaurant today.…

As a child growing up I was born and raised as a country boy. Not too far from the inner city, but far enough from most convenience stores. Moving in the city not knowing the city life as well as I do now. I came across a few problems. These problems I would call them life’s experiences. Whether they be good or bad. The three problems I came across were. Public schools, meeting new friends, and understanding the difference in personalities.…

    Being Black in America

As I sit here and think about what it is to be Black in America. I realize how there are so many factors that affect African American people daily. One of the most damaging forces tearing at young black people in America today is the popular culture's image of what an "authentic" black person is supposed to look like and how that person is supposed to act. People assume all black males where raised in a single parent home. People assume that if you are a black male, that you sale drugs or you are really great in some type of sport. If you are a black female, they assume you will have kids by different men, referred to as “baby daddy” or they may not even know who the fathers of their children are. This same society expects African Americans’ to be uneducated, and having a lack of knowledge of their government or their surroundings in life.…

African American mothers play a unique role in the family structure as a result of the discrimination and prejudice that they have come to expect. A role that, though not outwardly feminine or gentile, is nonetheless very significant in the American story of motherhood. This new embodiment of motherhood questions conventional standards of behaviour, standards that associate maternity with specific behavioural traits. In The Bluest Eye, Morrison pokes fun at these traditional ideals of femininity and fragility that act to restrict and dictate the behaviour of women. Commonly in literature, if a woman falls short of fulfilling her patriarchal duties she is portrayed as an archetype, specifically the archetype of the bad mother. Morrison does…

It went to a point where I didn't know what to cook for myself as I didn't want to make her ill. I also have food allergies/sensitivities which make my eating choices limited. People with sensitivities to smells, odors, fragrance and the like, for safety, tend to be isolated. Least of all, with this sensitivity, being fully aware of the complexity of the situation, I did not want to be the person to make her ill. I know how it feels when people "don't get the issue" and are offended that it is their choice of product that we do not…
