Half of his voice is made electronically and the rest of it is a mixture of whistles, water pipes, and vocalizations by Burtt. Example 2 of the sound design techniques is Chewbacca. His sounds are made out of part of walrus sounds and other animal sounds. Example 3 of the sound design techniques are the light sabers. Their sound effects are made by Burtt mixing the sounds of an old 35 mm projector and a TV set to create the noises for the light sabers. His technique is further emphasized through meticulous technical mastery. Aside from the linear, frontally-focused framework of the planimetric schematic, Anderson has brilliantly achieved bilateral symmetry within these shots, throughout the oeuvre of his work. Even after tracking shots or pans the camera always lands in a perfectly centered, symmetrical shot. He also employs what Bordwell calls “compass-point editing,” which essentially places the camera at the center of a compass, and the cuts jump from zero to 180 degrees (the reverse shot) or at 90 degrees (the action in profile) (Bordwell 2007).…

The sound design is most evident in the beginning when Casey is opening the box. You can hear the iconic sounds of legos smashing together, as well as the very satisfying sounds of a metal key hitting the wood box. The rustling of paper as he is looking through all of the memories was also nice and clear. The sound of the typewriter writing was also very well done throughout the entire piece. Lastly, the score really complements the action on screen. It has an inspiring, curious, and sad mood all at the same time. Even more so, the score gets out of the way of the dialogue when it needs to, so that you can focus on the story.…

We are venturing again to Los Angeles this week where 1987 graduate, Corey Jackson, works as a film and television composer. After a movie is made, Corey meets with the director of the film to “spot” the film. This is the process of deciding where music should go in the film and what emotions the music should portray. After the spot, Corey writes the music for one scene at a time. Each composition is sent to the director for approval. Corey says that the director may like it the first time or may send it back with notes and suggestions for him to try again. “Once that is completed I, with the help of my team, will record, mix and deliver the music to the dubbing stage for final mix,” says Jackson. He also describes being on the set of a movie as not glamorous, contrary to what some may think. On a constant deadline, he says working is hard, time consuming, and challenging, but working with like minded people who all have the same ultimate goal and work ethic makes it easier.…

1.We see examples of visible, or diegetic sounds, constantly in this movie. Specifically, in the trash compactor scene when Luke and Han Solo are in a fight with the stormtroopers, the sound of the lasers are a direct result from the action occuring on screen. Another example is the music that the Bith band is playing at the cantina. Anyone present at the cantina would hear it, so it definitely is a diegetic sound. 2.…

By altering the sound of a punch press along with the sound of bicycle chains being dropped on concrete Ben Burtt created the sound of the Imperial Walkers, this gives them a sense of mass and greatness. The sound of a TIE Fighter is made from an elephant bellow however it was drastically electronically altered to make it sound more futuristic and create a sense of speed, it makes the audience aware of how fast they travel as it swooshes past the screen multiple times. The Wookie (Chewbacca) sounds where constructed of walruses, bears and other animal sounds because the character is animal like and looks somewhat like an adapted bear, the audience can relate to this because its sound is an expectation of the viewers. R2-D2’s voice is a combination of electronically generated sounds, water pipes, whistles, and vocalizations by Ben Burtt himself, he is a robot and is expected to make little electronic and beeping sounds.…
