Lily is a fourteen-year-old girl whose mother died when she was four years old, an accident that Lily feels she was responsible for. She dresses in clothes she made in home economics. She is not a popular person in school. She has jet-black hair that resembles a nest of cowlicks, no chin, Sophia Loren eyes and an inferiority complex. She takes to picking scabs on her body and biting the flesh around her fingernails until they bleed. Boys, even the hard-up ones, ignore her. Rosaleen makes Lily wear breeches in the cold, which are neither fashionable nor complimentary, especially under her dresses. Girls become quiet when she walks past, because she has no fashion…

Similarly, the main conflict Jess faces is her love for soccer versus her family’s expectations. Once she is given the chance to play competitively she realizes that she has what it takes to be a professional soccer player, and she wants to secure her chance. The conflict is her family’s expectations. Her family doesn’t want her to play the sport she loves because she is a woman. In her family’s culture, women are confined to the home. Her family believes that her only duty is to find a suitable husband, not play a silly sport. Due to this, Jess is torn between rebelling against her family’s decisions, but she also doesn’t want to miss her once in a lifetime opportunity to do what she loves.…

Louise’s entire character is powerfully ironic in that she is the furthest thing from a mother. Mothers are expected to be of caring and affectionate nature. However, Louise neglects Isabelle-Marie and treats her like an outsider since she is physically unattractive. Louise only favors her son Patrice because he reflects her outer beauty and she feels the necessity to sustain it by only nurturing him. Since Isabelle-Marie is physically unappealing, Louise does not love or treat her in the same fashion as Patrice. Isabelle Marie finally gains the courage to express how Louise has mistreated her. She exclaims, “[m]other, ever since I was a child you adored Patrice because he was beautiful and hated me, the ugly one. Patrice always Patrice! You never realized that your son was stupid, that he was an idiot…nothing but a beautiful body” (104). Isabelle-Marie’s tone is filled with contempt and jealousy while she spills out all the emotions that she had been bottling up for years. Louise always favoring Patrice due to his beautiful face even if he was just an “idiot” exasperates Isabelle-Marie. Moreover, Isabelle-Marie’s ill thoughts towards her own daughter and disfiguring her brother’s face can be seen as the result of her mother’s intolerance and lack of love towards her. Louise’s superficiality and favoritism towards Patrice transforms Isabelle-Marie to turn into a self-loathing and destructive character. Hence, Louise can be held responsible for creating this dysfunctional family. Rather than loving her children unconditionally as a mother should, she loves them based upon their looks. Therefore, ironically, even though Louise is their real mother, she fits the archetypal character of an evil stepmother due to her discriminate, mean and evil behavior.…

Such is the case for Ouiser and Clairee. Ousier’s children have all left home so the women at the hair salon are her closest friends. Clairee has many social obligations in the community, but despite this, she returns to her friends at Truvy’s Hair Salon and ultimately Ouiser for her emotional support and gossiping. Their friendship combines aspects that are traditionally masculine as well as those that are traditionally feminine—while feminine relationships focus on tenderness, and emotional bonding, masculine relationships focus on shared activities and are more ambitious and aggressive (Devito, 2015, p. 256-7). The women self-disclose a great deal about themselves, which is seen to be typically feminine. This self disclosure comes as a result of the ritual activities and interests that the women share. In the case of Ouiser and Clairee, they do not drift to serious topics easily, preferring to keep the discourse in their friendship lighthearted. However, they are not afraid to share their emotions with each other. Even Ouiser, the more emotionally-stunted of the pair is able to easily share her feelings with Clairee. For instance, as the two women were grocery shopping together, Ouiser is unafraid about expressing her regret and guilt over something she said earlier in the day. Clairee is quick to catch up on her guilt and comforts her by eloquently stating, “Ouiser, no one pays any attention to you.” While Ouiser is disclosing personal feelings to Clairee, Clairee in turn offers an aggressive rebuttal. This exchange demonstrates the fine line between masculine and feminine that their relationship…

These few sentences enable the reader to see what kind of person Andre's Mother was: homophobic, oblivious of her child's behaviors, and narrow-minded. As Cal compares her to the mother in the comic strip Little Lulu, he inadvertently calls her remote and formidable. Lulu's mother was so detached that nobody cared to know her name, and was simply referred to as Lulu's Mother, another way that Cal furthered the comparison. These descriptions fit her well as she knows nothing of her son's true self and struck fear in him, not allowing him to let his own mother inside the world that Cal and his family knew so well. Cal lets Andre's Mother know that her behaviors did not go unnoticed; when Andre was down he would ask him what the matter was, getting the response of "Just a little homesick, Cal, just a little bit" (1994). She instilled such angst in her own son that no matter how much he missed her, he wasn't able to face her.…

The film “My Vie En Rose” meaning My Life in Pink tells the story of a seven year old boy named Ludovic who is convinced that he actually is a girl living in a boy’s body. He tells his parents that "I 'm a boy now, but one day I 'll be a girl." Even years before puberty, he knows that there was a mix-up when he was handed his gender assignment. The film deals of the stress that is not only dealt with by Ludovic but also how his family deals with his realization. The film which is part fantasy, part comedy, and part satire deals with the role of sexual stereotypes in today’s culture. In today’s society there is nothing socially wrong with a girl who is a tomboy. This is a girl who prefers playing basketball then playing with dolls. It is seen as just part of growing up. But when the situation is flipped, and a boy starts to do things that most girls enjoy, it is deemed unacceptable in some circles. The kid who does this is likely to become a social pariah. This is the situation dealt with in this movie.…
