SCENE ONE
Five years later, Ruth, Walter, and Mama are sitting on a porch at their house. Toys and games are scattered around the yard where Travis is currently playing with his little sister. The splitting image of Travis, his younger sister plays with the same excitement he had so many years ago. A used, battered car pulls into the driveway. No acknowledges the car, but everyone is aware it has pulled up. After a few seconds, Beneatha exits the driver’s side, lugging a purse and a bag along with her. She is wearing scrubs, evident to her new job as a doctor, and it becomes quickly apparent that she didn’t go with Asagai to Africa. She heads up the front steps and drops her bags and keys onto the table in front of Mama. Taking the vacant chair next to Ruth, Beneatha finds herself relaxing for the first time that day. …show more content…
The Lindner house is up for foreclosure.
There’s a slight pause as Beneatha listens and ponders over the new information. There’s no outright smile on her face, but she looks very pleased with the news.
Beneatha: Serves him right, investing in the Market. There’s a comfortable pause between them before Beneatha speaks back up. Have you heard from Bobo? Directed at Walter, Beneatha hints to a repaired relationship between Bobo and Walter. Nothing has been heard of Willy, but after five years of saving, Walter and Bobo are getting ready to invest into a new business. After having waited for proper licensing and final investigations, Bobo and Walter were taking their time on this investment. This way they wouldn’t make the same mistakes as before.
Walter: Yeah—We’re going to talk tomorrow at lunch. Walter, after quitting his job as a chauffer, had taken an office job with Bobo. Their shared loss because of Willy led them to save together for an investment opportunity from their admittedly higher paying
