Benedict Arnold: Traitor or Hero
Benedict Arnold: traitor or hero

The average kid grows up learning that Benedict Arnold is known as the one of the greatest leaders of all times. He was a well-respected general but yet congress would not acknowledge him for his heroism. Displaying this betray towards the once loved general was shown at freeman's farm, the once place Benedict Arnold fought in the great Saratoga battle. There the famous boot monument stands displaying not only Arnold's heroism but treason as well. The "boot monument” tells the story of his wounded left leg during the great Saratoga battle. On the contrary, the monument does not display his name. This factor is because of his recorded history of treason. It is clearly shown that the monument represents benedict Arnold, but because so many people feel strongly about not having a traitor honored at a memorial sight; his name just could not be displayed. The fact of the matter is Benedict Arnold was a true die hard American and would do anything for his country; but He also shares the name as the biggest American traitor in history. Which is it? Does benedict hold the name for greatest leader of all time or traitor? Although the question is a great debate there are factors that support both ends.

When thinking about Arnold's reasoning’s for treason, and upstanding of his past must be made first. Benedict Arnold was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on January 14, 1741. He grew up in a household for 6. Although he grew up in a wealthy household, his brothers and sisters soon died from the yellow fever leaving him and his sister Hannah. Between this and his father’s soon addiction to alcohol, their family went into debt. When Benedict Arnold was 14 years old, he ran away from home to fight in the French and Indian War, but he was brought back by his mother. Benedict would have done anything to fight for his country. Benedict's mother soon passed away in which cause his father’s alcoholism to worsen. His father was arrested on

Samuel Butler, a famed novelist, once said “Self preservation is the first law of nature.” Although Benedict Arnold was born nearly a century before Butler, he must have held similar beliefs, as seen in his actions throughout the course of the American Revolution. The American Revolution began with the egregious debt in Great Britain, effects of their participation in the French and Indian War, which led to their constant creation of newer and more upsetting taxes in the colonies (Moore, Robert J.). Colonists became infuriated at the lack of influence in the government they had to prevent this abuse of power by their mother country. Rebellion and thoughts of independence began to develop in the minds of the angered colonists, and so societies such as the Daughters and Sons of Liberty were created to allow these revolutionary ideas to flourish.…

America, the nation started on the idea of a nation free from oppression has a dark often shameful history. The Trail of Tears following the Indian removal act is a perfect representation with direct legislature to prove it. Now I have to say that former president Andrew Jackson was a person I greatly admired and often visited the hallowed statue in New Orleans that stands ever vigilant as a visual tribute the man who stood with few to fight the many and came out victorious. Some historians view Jackson as a very controversial President, However historians will often agree that the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was not popular until, later on in retrospect but at the time seemed to be a viable option.” This area was home to the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole nations. These Indian nations, in the view of the settlers and many other white Americans, were standing in the way of progress. Eager for land to raise cotton, the settlers pressured the federal government to acquire Indian territory”.(pbs) The Indians being moved, had already been pushed out of the coastal regions now claimed by the new Americas and were now being moved again,…

Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. His intensions were to go out and find gold and spices to bring back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Spain.…

Umberto Eco’s quote, “The real hero is always a hero by mistake…” means that genuine heroes are not those who anticipate specific deeds in order to become a hero, but rather those individuals who are confronted with unexpected situations, and develop into accidental or unintentional heroes.
