One of the first of many ways that Benjamin Franklin bettered the people around him was the founding of the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1731. He founded it with his own book collection, as well as some books that the members of the Junto donated. This metal fireplace was designed as to reduce smoke output while increasing the heat output. It succeeded in this, and it did not require as much wood to fuel as a normal fireplace. This was an innovative breakthrough at the time, but despite the amount of money Franklin could have made by patenting the Stove, he decided instead to leave it unpatented, since it would become much more widely distributed that way, and in the future it could be improved
