Benjamin Franklin was born January 17, 1706. He was the youngest child of Josiah and Abiah Franklin. He had 16 brothers and sisters, seven of which were only half siblings from his father’s previous marriage. He grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 17 he ran away from
home, and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At age 8 his father sent him to Boston Latin School, a grammar school. This was supposed to be the beginning of his ministry. For financial reasons Ben had to transfer to a school for mathematics and writing. He stayed at that school till he was 10 years old. After three years of schooling, he left school and joined the family business. At the age of 25 he had a common-law marriage to Deborah Read Rodgers. Together they had 3 children, William, Francis, and Sarah. At the age of 4, their son Francis, died of smallpox, because Benjamin failed to get the vaccination. In December of 1774, Ben’s wife Deborah died from a stroke.
Throughout Ben Franklin’s life he had many accomplishments. In the year of 1736 he, and a group of men started the nation’s first volunteer firefighter organization, which lead to many more volunteer departments. A major title he is very famous for is being one of our county’s founding fathers. He took part in signing the Treaty of Peace with Great Brittan, the Declaration of Independence. And also, the U.S. Constitution.
