In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Benvolio confuses Romeo’s love for Rosaline as lust. Benvolio advises Romeo to give up on his unreturned love for Rosaline and seek another woman: Benvolio: Be ruled by me, forget to think of her Romeo: O, teach me how I should forget to think. Benvolio: By giving liberty unto thine eyes; Examine other beauties. (1.1.233-236)
When Benvolio advises Romeo to “forget to think of her” he demonstrates how he thinks Romeo lusts for Rosaline not actually loves her. Benvolio believes Romeo’s love for Rosaline is extremely shallow, so therefore assuming by forgetting to think of her Romeo will move on from her. Romeo then responds to Benvolio “O, teach me how I should forget”, Romeo means he cannot just stop thinking of her because she is all he thinks about. In order to stop thinking of her he would have to stop thinking all together. Considering it is so difficult to stop thinking of her Romeo has an emotional attachment towards her, by doing this he justifies why he more than lusts after her. Benvolio then answers back “By giving liberty to thine eyes. Examine other beauties”, by doing this Benvolio shows how shallow he is because he is telling Romeo to look at other girls not get to know them. Benvolio’s confusion on whether Romeo loves or lusts Rosaline is made clear when he states in different forms it is easy to get over visuals of someone if you don’t have emotional feelings towards them.

Benvolio and Mercutio are complete opposites. Though they may be opposites, they are great friends in The Tragedy Romeo and Juliet. They compliment each other like cookies and milk. For example, Mercutio loves to live in the moment while Benvolio likes to be more logical and passive. When Mercutio gets out of hand, Benvolio at least tries to keep him in check. While Mercutio loves being the center of attention, Benvolio is more than happy to stay out of the limelight. They weren’t complete opposites though. One thing they had in common was Romeo. They were his best friends. They played different, but complementary, roles in Romeo’s life. While Benvolio is more understanding and listens to Romeo, Mercutio isn’t very understanding. His way of…

Mercutio is the friend of Romeo and Benvolio and the relative of Prince Escalus. He is extremely relevant to the plot, for Mercutio provoked Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, causing the two to fight. "Come, sir, your passado." (III.i.80). Romeo attempted to intervene which gave Tybalt leverage to reach around him and stab Mercutio. The death of his friend angered Romeo, who then fought and killed Tybalt, thus granting him exile to Mantua and leaving the rest of the plot to fall into place.…

There is an instant connection between fated lovers. For that reason, one can say that Romeo's love for Rosaline is not ever lasting. This is clear when Romeo says: "With Rosaline! My ghostly Father, no. I have forgot that name, and that name's woe" (Act 2, scene 3: 46-47). This quote states that Romeo used to be madly in love with Rosaline. However, he has completely forgotten about her as his heart goes out to Juliet. This quote is significant as it proves that Romeo has moved on from his first love. This statement demonstrates how Shakespeare characterizes love--to be momentary. Not only does Romeo's love for Rosaline reveal love to not be infinite but so do the following relationships.…
