Beowulf an Epic Tale
Beowulf is a powerful tale about a hero who battles beasts and dies a tragic heroic death. This tale of Beowulf is an epic that has been adapted throughout the years. The book version of this tale is very different from the 2007 movie version. Although the characters are the same many things have changed in the plot of the story and in the aesthetics of the story. The different adaptations are equally great but are very different from each other.
One change between the book and the movie is that Beowulf does not go home. In the film he stays in the land of the Danes. This is because king Hrothgar commits suicide and leaves all of his belongings including the queen to Beowulf. Also Grendel’s mother defeats all of Beowulf’s army in the night. When Beowulf sets out to go and defeat Grendel’s mother he is overwhelmed by her beauty. This is yet another difference in the book Grendel's mother was a hideous creature but in the movie she is beautiful. She leads to the demise of Beowulf.
A major plot change in the movie occurs when Beowulf goes to kill Grendel’s mother. Instead of killing her he instead has a child with her. This is a big change to the story in the book this event does not occur. Their child is portrayed as a dragon a beast who is essentially all of Beowulf’s wrong doings. His wrong doing are manifested in the form of a dragon it’s like he is the cause of his own destruction. Beowulf’s son will ultimately be the demise of Beowulf at the end of the 2007 movie adaptation.
In the end of the movie Beowulf dies trying to save the Danes from his son. The movie portrays that Beowulf was the cause for his own demise in the end. Beowulf made the same mistakes that king Hrothgar made and ultimately suffered the same consequences. The book doesn’t elaborate on the ending like the movie does. In the book he just dies by some dragon but in the movie more meaning is put behind the story. Which makes the movie more interesting.
