The film (Beowulf) was featured, In Denmark in the year 507 A.D., elderly King Hrothgar Anthony Hopkins dedicates his new mead hall in a drunken revelry. He and his people have conquered other lands. Although his queen, Wealthow Robin Wright Penn clearly disapproves, the assembled warriors and maidens clearly enjoy themselves. However, in a cavern not far from the mead hall, the singing and dancing is a painful nuisance to the misshapen half-human, half-demon Grendel Crispin Glover. Enraged, Grendel attacks the mead hall and kills or maims many of the warriors. He spares Hrothgar's life, however, after he returns to the cavern, his mother, a water demon Angelina Jolie…
Beowulf: Archetypes Beowulf, has numerous archetypes ranging from the battle between good versus evil, light versus dark, the hero and the outcast. The main character, Beowulf, is the hero of the epic on a journey to defeat an evil incarnate. Travelling with Beowulf on the quest is King Hrothgar and his men which represent the light. The task at hand is to kill Grendel, representing darkness as well as an outcast, which ultimately brings peace back to the land. Throughout this journey, Beowulf will prevail against many enemies in the battle between good and evil, even though they get stronger as the quest continues.…
Throughout his battles, Beowulf personifies the motifs of reputation, vengeance, and fate which contribute to the overall epic theme. Each of these contrasting themes contribute as to why Beowulf was such a tremendous epic hero. Beowulf, a young warrior with an honorable family name to be upheld, must venture off and seek his own reputation and identity among the sprawling branches of the family tree. With this thought, he seeks out to battle the mighty fiend Grendle armed with his two own bare hands. With much vengeance being sought out, Grendle’s mother goes after Beowulf for harming her son which only prevokes Beowulf’s own revenge on Grendle’s mother for slaughtering one of Hrogthgar’s best warriors, Esther. Later on in life as an aged and wise king, Beowulf single handedly faces his own fate by battling the dragon. By crumbling under the dragon’s rage, death has been accepted and has furthered his name.…
Beowulf’s external conflicts are part of what creates his internal conflict. Beowulf must defeat the monster Grendel whom had been killing men in the middle of the night and taking their bodies. “Beowulf heard how Grendel was filling nights with horror so he commanded a boat so he could go see king Hrothgar.” (Beowulf 23) He had fought and killed monsters before, but none were on the scale of Grendel. He fought Grendel with no weapons leaving only his hands to kill the monster. “Had he met a man whose hands were harder….but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight grip. Grendel’s one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there.” (Beowulf 33) Grendel had never been challenged this way before, causing Beowulf’s tactic to pay off. “The sounds changed, the Danes started in new terror, cowering in their beds as the terrible screams of the Almighty’s enemy sang in the darkness, the horrible shreaks of pain and defeat, the tears torn out of Grendel’s taut throat, hell’s captive caught in the arms of him who of all the men on earth was the strongest.” (Beowulf 33-34) Beowulf killed the mighty monster creating an internal battle.…
Beowulf was one in many men who has been described to have a monster in him. The way a person deals with it and how they choose to deal with it, made them who they were. Beowulf had great character and the way he used the monster within had many people questioning his true abilities as a hero and as a king. He fought in so many battles, many described as being monstrous or an animalistic. The most famous mentioned is the fight with the monster Grendel. He was somewhat compared to Grendel because they had many things in common. Beowulf as a monster was not a bad thing at all. He used his abilities to fight for the greater cause, but it had some downsides. What makes a man a true monster? Is it how a man fights or the way he fights? There were many pros and cons considered the fights he had with the monster within. A man that lived his life for the adventure that caused him to be alone a lot or the specific way he fought all were described as monster characteristic. He was a different kind of monster. He gave back even when he did not have to and he respected other men and their reputations. He used these monstrous characteristics for to do positive with which helped him to become a better hero; and because Beowulf had a positive influence on people as a hero; it made it easy for him to become a great king. Beowulf monstrous characteristics helped him to develop a protective mode and helped him to be strong for others when they needed him to. I also gave him great leadership skills. These characteristics were what made a king, a king.…
Each monster Beowulf fights against represents the adversary of what the Germanic culture deems as righteous and good. Grendel, the first monster, did not like the fact that there were parties in the mead hall so he tried to put an end to their pleasure and happiness. After Grendel, the people of Herot were peaceful and comfortable but Grendel’s mom took that peace away by instilling fear in the citizens. Later on, the dragon is also represented as an adversary since the Germanic culture generally loves and has a need for gold but the dragon took that away by hoarding the gold.…
The first battle that Beowulf fought was against the demonic beast Grendel. In this fight he helped out the Dans out of desire for renown and honor. He fights the demon with no armor and no weapon as to make the fight fair. When Grendel enters the mead hall, where the fight is taking place, he has his arm ripped off him and Grendel is not finished off he retreated to the swamps to die.…
The hero of all heroes, Beowulf, strong and courageous, is the prince of Geats. Once he makes a vow, he stands by his word, no matter what the cost, even if it takes his life. He is reluctant to back down from battle, just so he can be there for the people who are in great need to be saved from evil. He signifies the true heroic character because he is willing to risk his life for his ideals. Beowulf defeats three gruesome monsters, two of whom are descendants of Cain. Beowulf is able to show his characteristics both in his youth and in his older days.…
Tolkien has states “for the universal significance which is given to the fortunes of its hero it is an enhancement and not a detraction, in fact it is necessary, that his final foe should be not some Swedish prince, or treacherous friend, but a dragon” (Tolkien 5). The poem of Beowulf would not be as dramatic without the creatures such a Grendel, Grendel’s mom or even the dragon. For this instance the author of Beowulf has introduced these characters to emphasize the story of a hero facing multiple forces of evil which is what makes this story universally understood rather than a story in which the hero faces another human. This may be reinforced with Tolkien’s thoughts when he writes “It is just because the main foes in Beowulf are inhuman that the story is larger and more significant than this imaginary poem of a great king's fall” (Tolkien 6). The monsters signify an evil which exists in our human roots and as hard as one may try to defeat the evil it always returns. Beowulf died trying to defeat evil yet the author is telling us that the evil will always be there as it is in our nature. Ultimately I believe that Tolkien should consider the possibility that author of the poem created the work as a historical art which may be interpreted in many ways dependent on the…
After thinking about the past years of my life I have found few major moments of joy; which just goes to show how rare they are and that if we do not recognize them they will just fly on by. Occurrences such as these are something that need to be held on to and cherished, and that is just what I have done.…
There are plenty of characters in the epic poem “Beowulf” but none are as dynamic as Beowulf himself. As the main character and protagonist, he is thoroughly developed throughout the poem. While some of his traits jump right out at you (confidence, strength, bravery), other are buried and subtle. Beowulf is wise, compassionate, and honorable and these characteristics shape the entire poem.…
The first of Beowulf’s monsters represents the physical evils. Grendel was the first monster fought by Beowulf in the epic of similar name. The mighty Geat warrior fought with this beast in hand-to-hand combat. Beowulf physically fought with the Monster which gives the idea that the Grendel symbolize the Physical evil in this world. Another name for these evils is evils that we can see with the human eye. Physical evils are evils that are easy to detect because we can see them…
Part A- Beowulf like all epic hero’s is strong loyal and brave. These characteristic are what define Beowulf, and instill fear is his enemies. He boasts about “(driving) / five great giants into chains” (248-249) and “In the blackness of night, hunting monsters” (251). Beowulf protects his followers and king, and is proud of his accomplishments. He strives for greatness, his words are arrogant but his actions shine through his overbearing pride and give him the capability to be heroic. (Part B) Beowulf is an epic hero; he takes great pride in his actions, unlike Grendel who feels jealous of humans which causes him to be spiteful towards them: “ Grendel snatched at the first Geat / He came to (and) Ripped him apart” (313-314). Grendel’s pride lays in the fear he instills on humans, without pride Grendel would be a monster with no motive to kill. Furthermore, Beowulf’s pride stems…
I believe that the poem is a better definition of a true epic. In the poem, Beowulf does more heroic like things, when he rips Grendels arm off with his bare hands, with only using his pure strength, but in the movie Beowulf wraps a chain around Grendels arm, and uses the door of the Mead Hall to repeatedly smash his arm in the door until he rips the arm off completely. In the poem, Beowulf always tries to make himself better known, he goes back to his kingdom to tell all of the Geats of his accomplishments, and whenever he dies Beowulf asks his warrior to build him a tower with his treasures and his best warrior becomes king.…
Beowulf’s journey begins when he is implored by the Geats to defeat the monster Grendel. In order to “heighten Hyeglac’s fame and gladden his heart” Beowulf decides to forsake the use of weapon and shield in his battle with Grendel (435-36). He displays the confidence and arrogance that are hallmarks of brazen youth. His reckless abandonment of protection renders him unnecessarily prone to harm. Beowulf eventually triumphs over Grendel following an arduous contest and is “praised over and over again” by the grateful Geats (856). This praise only feeds his egotistical mentality. His sense of invincibility is only heightened by his victory and while he may be seemingly untouchable in his youthful prowess, age will soon sap him of his greatness. Even though he is confident to the point of recklessness, Beowulf’s heroic abilities cannot be denied and he continues to add to his legacy after his defeat of Grendel.…
