The movie creators might’ve added these details in the movie to give us their perspective of what they believe would’ve happened in the book. Also, this could’ve been done to give us an idea of other things that might’ve been happening in the time period that story takes place in. For example, Hrothgar had never mentioned having a wife while he was king. The book had barely mentioned any women besides Grendel’s mother. I feel like women were not mentioned as much in the book because women weren’t considered as important as they are now. When Beowulf was written, the only thing a woman was good for was bearing children. Also, The book never mentioned Hrothgar killing himself. He left Beowulf with the crown and his wife. In the book, Beowulf was only given the title of the King. Secondly, the author’s tone in the book creates Beowulf’s character to seem brave and strong. He can be considered these things because of his stories of success. Herot prides him of these successes, but they have only heard stories of his success. I believe that these changes allotted for a more interesting story than a man killing a bunch of monsters. While the book allowed us to create our own thoughts and ideas, I feel that watching a movie based on a book will always give better clarification of another person’s perspective.
