He say he wasn't going to use weapons. I mean, in the poem, Beowulf said the reason Grendel didn't use weapons because his mind was frenzied, primal, and unorganized. This means that Grendel doesn't use any tools in combat at all. I think that includes chains and doors. If Beowulf wanted to be fair, he should have tried to take off Grendel's.. So his clothes is considered a weapon? Wow, the movie's just trying to find some excuse to have his clothes off KIDDING He used a door and a chain... And they used a weapon to pin the chain to the pole.... I've read the book and I hear the movie does a terrible job portraying the real story. Didn't he rip Grendel's arm off with his bare hands? That would have been more awesome than him running around…
Although Beowulf is under no obligation to do so, he demonstrates his loyalty to Hrothgar by willingly fighting to the death in order to defend the Danes against the evil monster Grendel. Winning victoriously, Beowulf proudly displays Grendel's shoulder and arm by hanging it from Heorot's rafters for everyone to see. This trophy with "Every nail, claw-scale and spur, every spike and welt... like barbed steel," (lines 983-986) symbolizes the evil that has threatened the harmony of Hrothgar's retainers from being able to protect Heorot and their lord. When Hrothgar gazes upon Grendel's talon, when he praises Beowulf as the "flower of manhood" (942), and when he adopts Beowulf as his own son, the reader senses the importance of this symbol reflecting the interdependence necessary for survival in an Anglo-Saxon society.…
In Beowulf, strong sensory imagery emphasizes the societal values of courage and fate. The imagery stresses the importance of courage as an admired and respected trait for any person in the Anglo-Saxon society. The imagery also enhances fate as the ruler of men’s destinies. As the images collect throughout the poem, the reader realizes how these strong societal values in turn enhance this heroic battle between good and evil.…
On lines 116-119 of the poem, it says that Beowulf “Won’t go to fight Grendel without the Lord’s consent...”. This shows that Beowulf values the word of his Lord, and will not proceed with his mission until he gets His approval. Later in the poem, it says “They gave thanks to their God for their easy crossing”. Beowulf and his men attribute their tame voyage to God, believing he is responsible for their lack of troubles. Lastly, on lines 268-270, Beowulf remarks “Alone shall fight for me, Struggles for life against the monster.…
Even though there are many significant differences between the stories “Beowulf” and “Grendel” there are certain factors that stand out. When reading “Beowulf” he is portrayed as an animalistic being, like a huge beast. With this in mind the reader is given the notion he is driven purely on his beastly, or animal instincts, and having no human instincts to guide him what so ever. This thought is proven throughout the story when is referred to as “the monster”. He is known for terrorizing the Hgrothgar’s people. In reading the novel “Grendel” it is told in his point of view therefore not being seen as a viscous killing machine. Although the two stories have their differences his nature, being animalistic, is seen in both. His purpose or goal is shown different in the novel “Grendel” as compared to the epic poem “Beowulf”.…

In the Anglo-Saxon culture, no desire for an afterlife was offered; however, warriors could be granted immortality through poems or songs which were told by bards to the King. The only story to survive from the Anglo-Saxon culture is the epic poem Beowulf. According to Anglo-Saxon society, a definition which is still valid today, is that a hero is generally defined by certain qualities: one who is recognized for inspiring everyone or simply for saving the lives of others. Heroes inspire because when their limits are tested, they respond in remarkable ways. They go above and beyond because they know they can protect the ones that surround them. For example, in Beowulf, Beowulf is the Anglo-Saxon hero because he embodied bravery, honor, strength,…
Beowulf reflects many ideals of Anglo-Saxon society in every battle he fights. During his battle with grendel his is fighting mostly for his own fame which was highly valued during the time period. If a person’s name lived on after they had died it was considered to be a successful life and every person wanted a legacy for themselves. Also, he brought back Grendel’s arm as a trophy but also as proof that he had done a great deed and defeated Grendel. After killing Grendel’s mother Beowulf find Grendel’s body and severs his head to bring it back to king Hrothgar as proof that he indeed had killed Grendel. He also gives gifts to one of Hrothgars coast guards which was also custom of Anglo-Saxon culture. Lastly, his final battle with the fire-breathing…
