Beowulf's Quest
People describe heroes in many different ways. Some people consider police, firemen, soldiers, and others who protect us heroes. However, other people might consider people who save children or animals from dangerous situations, survive chronic illnesses, or doctors to be considered heroes. When most people describe heroes, they are describing someone who has done an amazing, selfless act for somebody else. Beowulf is considered to be an epic hero because he possesses superhuman abilities, is charged with a quest, and is tested to prove the worthiness of himself and his quest.
Beowulf is blessed with many superhuman abilities that help to define him as an epic hero. One of his superhuman abilities is having extraordinary strength. When Beowulf …show more content…
In the story of Beowulf, he is charged with three main quests. In Beowulf’s first quest, he travels on a ship from Sweden to help King Hrothgar defeat Grendel. Once Grendel is defeated, Beowulf must travel to the bottom of an eerie lake in a cave to defeat Grendel’s mother. In his final quest, Beowulf must travel to defeat a dragon terrorizing a village. These many quests also help to prove Beowulf as an epic hero. Beowulf is not only proven as an epic hero because of his many quests, he is also tested to prove the worthiness of himself. In the story of Beowulf, he is not only tested once, but three times. The first time Beowulf is tested is when he fights and defeats Grendel. Beowulf is tested a second time by fighting and defeating Grendel’s mother. Beowulf is tested a final time by fighting the dragon. However, Beowulf did defeat the dragon, but the dragon also defeated Beowulf. Beowulf is proven a hero by being tested three separate times. Beowulf is considered to be an epic hero because he possesses superhuman abilities, is charges with a quest, and is tested to prove the worthiness of himself and his quest. Beowulf proves over and over again in many different ways that he is an epic hero. However someone decides to characterize what a hero might be, Beowulf should fall into that description.     Throughout the epic, Beowulf demonstrated his strength as a warrior and a leader. When Grendel arrived at Herot, the other warriors “could not scratch at his skin, for that sin-stained demon had bewitched all men's weapons, laid spells that blunted every mortal man's blade.”(92-94). Beowulf took charge and used his own hands to fight and eventually defeat Grendel since his fellow men could not do so.     Beowulf's physical strength is revealed to the reader through his amazing feats and his unbelievable battles with mystical creatures. In lines 91 and 92 it states that Beowulf was the strongest man in the world. These words come from the Geats who are barbaric people to begin with. The fact that they speak so highly of Beowulf's strength is a testament to its truthfulness. After Beowulf arrives in Denmark he quickly travels to Herot to prepare for his battle with Grendel. In the lines following 307 it is stated that Grendel was instantly seized by Beowulf upon trying to clutch him. This is a feat that no man was able to accomplish before Beowulf's arrival. Beowulf's strength is also shown in his battle with Grendel's mother. In lines 465 and 466 it states that Beowulf was able to throw the she-witch to the ground. This only reemphasizes Beowulf's great physical strength. Finally, Beowulf's strength is shown in his battle with the dragon. Beowulf's battle with the dragon occurs when he is an old man. The fact that Beowulf is still able to defeat the dragon shows the reader the extent of his great strength.     “The poem contains clear examples of the initial stage of the Call to Adventure.” (Kelley 7). The “Call To Adventure”, is when the hero’s world is introduced to a new threat. In beowulf’s case, that threat was Grendel. The journey itself could be labeled as another part of the hero’s quest called “The Approach” where the hero and his/hers allies must prepare for a challenge (Vogler 1). However, there was another journey occurring as Beowulf went to fight Grendel, the hero’s inner journey. The first step to the hero’s inner journey is “Having limited awareness of the problem” (Vogler 1) and Beowulf, to some extent, had limited awareness of the problem because he had no idea that his quest would cause him to undergo a change of a lifetime. The fight with Grendel’s mother is a repeat of the “Call to adventure” and “The approach” but it furthers the inner journey of Beowulf. It was the step of “Preparing for major change” because Beowulf was becoming more attached to the kingdom, which allowed Beowulf to be better prepared for taking on the role as “King of Geats”. After being crowned king and the dragon attacks, the hero’s quest cycle repeats once again, but, the inner journey is furthered because Beowulf had came to accept his possible doom at the hands of the dragon. Also, the hero’s quest is furthered because this fight can be labeled as “The Ordeal” Where the hero faces their greatest challenge/fear (Vogler 1). Beowulf’s fight with the dragon ended with both the dragon’s and Beowulf’s death, which is one of the last steps to the hero’s quest cycle, “The Resurrection” where the hero dies or sacrifices something and resolves all conflicts (Volger 1).     One way it is seen that Beowulf was an epic hero was his more-than-human strength. For example, the story stated, “… hell’s captive caught in the arms / Of him who of all the men on earth / Was the strongest” (347-349). In this part of the story, Beowulf had caught Grendel in his supernatural grip after Grendel had attacked the Geats. This shows his epic hero trait of having more-than-human strength. Grendel, the evil giant, had no hope of escaping Beowulf’s supernatural hands. In addition, the author wrote, “… hanging high / From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster’s / Arm, claw and shoulder and all” (393-395). What is happening in this quote is that Beowulf had ripped off Grendel’s arm, ending the long, gruesome battle. Therefore, Beowulf’s epic hero trait of having supernatural strength can be seen from the way he ripped off Grendel’s impenetrable arm. Also, the story says, “…For hours he sank through the waves…” (423). In this part of the story Beowulf is going underwater to defeat Grendel’s mom.
