This demanding school of 1,116 students utilizes a traditional curriculum in the humanities to prepare youngsters for a new world. These high achievers must also take on a course load of eight academic subjects each semester — one more than most New York City high schoolers. Not surprisingly, admission to this cloistered elite is a rigorous process. Applicants must be in the 90th percentile or above for math and standardized reading tests, and maintain an overall grade point average of 90 in June of their 7th grade year. The oldest of the small schools in the Christopher Columbus Educational Campus, Pelham Preparatory Academy regularly trumps the city’s average graduation and attendance rates. The faculty go to lengths to get to know each of its 500 young scholars. Many of the students have individualized education plans, and take advantage of special education services as they complete the 2½ to 3 hours of homework they have each night in honors and AP courses.
