Beth And Casey's Lack Of Communication In Marriage

Communication influences many areas of life. Communication is important in any relationship, but it becomes a priority when married. It allows people to gain an understanding of others and themselves. It is a way to express emotions and problems within the relationship. Offutt shows many examples where Beth and Casey show a lack of communication. In the beginning, of the story, Beth goes to pick up her drunk husband at the neighbor's house Lil who had been also drinking (131). A wife doesn't appreciate her husband drinking with another female. It's disrespectful and distrustful to the marriage. Beth not once told Casey how she disapproved of him doing this. Beth should have talked to Casey about the situation. Another example, when Beth went
to talk to Nomey about her two options to keep Aunt Granny Lith away and she tells Casey, “Nomey took a token on it”. Casey replies, “A token! I’m sick of tokens, Beth, that’s all you two can do” (142). When a marriage is on the brinks or threatened it should be discussed between the couple. Outside people's advice is welcomed to help resolve a situation, but the ultimate decision to resolve the problem will be the couples. Beth failed to ask Casey what he thought would be the best way to go about this situation.
