Bethany Fortier
Bethany Fortier is the single most encouraging person I have had the pleasure of encountering my college career. She is not the academic adviser I started with, but she is the mentor, professor, and friend I hope to keep post college. Her commitment to my success is extraordinary. She understands my needs in and out of the classroom and provides me with the tools and inspiration I need to prosper in the healthcare world.
To say that I haven’t taken the most traditional academic road is an understatement, but Bethany understands and has never judged me for this. When I blurted out that I need to make time for my job in order to continue my education here she completely understood and without skipping a beat began a hunt for courses that fit my unique schedule.
Her most stellar quality of being an adviser is her excitement whenever we enter her office. At the beginning of every course offering meeting Bethany provides a list of courses she guessed you were taking. It’s become a game to see if she’s correct (she is almost always correct (even with my wacky schedule)).
In the classroom she has the students in awe. Her person anecdotes and guest speakers provide an unparalleled experience. It is never blasé and it couldn’t possibly be boring with

Together we have compiled a list of graduate schools that I have a great shot of getting into, thanks to her pushing me to work hard in my classes and excel outside of the classroom. I would never have applied to be an Orientation Leader, gotten a job at an elementary school, or become a student representative on the HWOS council without her wisdom. Bethany always knows the next step in my pursuit of my dreams. She has encouraged me to try out anything I showed interest in, she helped me schedule meetings with Career Services to perfect my resume, and supported me in pursuing research in a setting I knew nothing

My Visual Art professor, Victoria Moore is an interesting and established human whose love of the arts got her where she is today. She works at SUNY Brockport full time and is well known in her department. Both the public and I know her to be creative, friendly, and a great teacher. Her work goes beyond the classroom through her own projects and artistic creations. When she is not in the classroom, she is grading papers, preparing new assignments, looking for class examples, responding to emails, ordering supplies, and, her personal favorite, working on her own jewelry and utensil line.…

In terms of academics, Ms. Biszewski pushed us to challenge ourselves. She always had the next step in mind. For example, she made sure we were well prepared for high school and provided us with all the tools necessary to get there. In math, we were only two chapters behind one of the area high school math courses. She incorporated the new Common Core curriculum and made sure, although really confusing and different from what we knew and how we were taught previously, we understood the concepts. When I got to Marist, Algebra was pretty easy for me because she did such a great job getting me ready.…

Danielle also had an amazing strength with kids. She opened Bright Futures a Daycare/ Preschool at age 21, and it is still open to this day in her memory. The partner I chose to interview was Caitlin Hanning. On Tuesday, the first day of school, we happened to sit by each other and out of laziness we chose to just interview each other instead of finding someone across the room. I found out through the interview it was both of our first year at BPCC, and we had similar majors, although while she is majoring in OT I am majoring in OTA. I also found out that her nickname is "Granny", which is hilarious to me. Why someone thought she deserved that nickname is a mystery to me, but it’s certainly unique.…

Her un-quavering belief that a student is more than his/her mark inspires her students to perform beyond their maximum potential. She gives of herself to every aspect of the school, especially the success and the wellbeing of her students. This inspires me because I can see that being a teacher means so much more to her than just educating someone with the set syllabus. It is not a job; it is a calling.…

Throughout high school, there have been many people who have inspired me, but the one who has left the most impact on my life is Courtney Chumley. She was my Algebra II teacher sophomore year. At the beginning of that year, I had a negative attitude towards her for two reasons: she seemed very rude and snobby and simply because she taught math. All of those negative feelings quickly faded away when I realized what a wonderful and caring person she was. I’m not really sure how we became friends, if I’m honest, I just found myself coming to talk to her more often. Whenever that school year ended, I was worried that we would lose the bond that we formed throughout the school year, but I could not have been more wrong.…

Within the plain, white, confining walls that border our composition classroom in the depths of the Netherlands core, there sits a student who is so completely opposite to the barriers that surround us all. As an avid participant in classroom discussions, she is easy to notice amongst the blur of faces as one looks around the circle of occupied desks. Positivity and intelligence simply radiate from her aura, bringing the rest of the students, including myself, out of our own stupors and back into a mentality that is prepared to learn. I came to know her beyond the handmade name tag reading “Kelsey” that sits tall before her every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Kelsey Picciano is an indispensable contributor to our class. With her unmistakably sensible personality, passionate drive for leadership, and inextinguishable positivity, she is the person who makes our class more responsive to the infinite possibilities of new ideas and theories that we explore.…

I won’t forget the day I met Tina Gorsuch who serves as my Mentor and Employer. It was a rainy day and I had finished my classes but was disillusioned about life. I had nowhere to go so I decided to go to a Pub and drink to stupor. As I walked towards my Car, I felt this empty feeling that made me distraught. I was to accompany my Sister to see her Dentist the next day so I just managed to stumble home. The night was uneventful as I kept gazing at the Stars and wondering what the future held.…
