Betrayal In Othello
Despite William Shakespeare’s Othello being a story written in a language that is extremely difficult for me to interpret, I found that I related more than I expected. The word betrayal is defined as the action of betraying one’s country, a group, or a person. This drama was similar to a scenario I had to endure when my twin brother, Eric chose a woman and betrayed his best friend, Daniel. It took me some time to discover the similarities between the two stories, but now I understand Shakespeare’s words more clearly. To begin, let me explain that me and my brother had always been close but that dynamic changed when we began high school. Daniel became the person that we spent all of our spare time with. Being a newlywed and on the road was hard to do but even harder when there was a man at home who was showing her how she should be treated. You see, my brother is not kind and is a very blunt and straight forward person. He was not the gentleman she believed him to be when they first started dating therefore, coincides with Shakespeare’s quote, “Men should be what they seem.” She was blindsided by the idea of love and marriage that she failed to see exactly who he was because he never pretended to be anyone but himself with her. As a result of being on the road and barely getting to see his new wife, Beth began to call Daniel for her basic needs such as: yard work, plumbing issues, spiders, and heavy lifting. Of course, this led to a lot of bonding time and they became close. I do not know who made the first move but I do know that Beth was well aware of Daniels love for her, but yet she still chose to cling to him when Eric was away for work. When Eric came home after his contract was over, Daniel decided to tell Eric that he loved his best friend’s wife and that she loved him too. Eric was enraged and lashed out at Daniel because he believed that his best friend betrayed him by going after his woman when she was vulnerable. The statement made by Othello, “Men in rage strike those that wish them best” resonated with me when reflecting back on this story. Regardless of how many people stood up for Daniel, saying that he was not the only one to blame, Eric chose Beth. She had told him a whole different story about how Daniel was just so persistent and he was there when she needed someone, but she never acted on anything because she did not love him. She made it seem like she was completely innocent but really she was aware of the desire Daniel had for her and she paraded around in her skimpy clothes and leaned on him when it was convenient for

Manipulation easily plays the biggest role in this play in ruining Othello for good. We should always be cautious of whom we allow into our personal lives, for not everyone is trustworthy.
