The announcement of Betsy DeVos to serve as commencement speaker at Bethune-Cookman University aroused many emotions. Understandably, a university president should be able to invite the U.S. Secretary of Education to speak to their students on graduation day, but this is different. This is beyond political ideology or educational philosophy. The anger that is shown towards this announcement is for the blatant disregard to learn our history and support national policy that will support and enhance our institutions. Evidence of this was shown in February when Betsy DeVos called HBCUs pioneers of “school choice”.     In this set of interviews, Angela Davis simultaneously addresses the issue of why we are stuck in this carceral state while also providing her solution, a solution that many would see as too radical.
