A few years ago, I volunteered at a physical therapy clinic and got to experience what it would be like to treat patients who were a variety of ages. When the therapists would do exercises and treatments, I noticed they spoke to the patient about how they were feeling in the moment and how they felt once they left the clinic. It was always clearly seen how engaged and talkative they were to their patients. Each time a patient developed new symptoms or a symptom disappeared the therapists would respond and modified each task given. It’s the human aspect that aids physical therapy. In “Better Than Human” by Kevin Kelly it say jobs like physical therapy can only be done right by humans in the world today and in the future where robots will soon be doing everything.

world around us. Decades ago robots were built to do thoughtless tasks that we would not even consider a job today. That is what will continue to happen: jobs that we do now robots will take over and soon leading to way bigger and better ones. Robots will be working alongside humans, allowing us to do the jobs that we never knew that we wanted done. Consider when something goes wrong with the robot's. We will be the ones to fix them; it will not be humans against robots if will be working together with them. Kelly mentions a robot known as Baxter who has many interesting features like: sensing the movement from people around him, being easily controllable, needing little to nothing training, and is affordable. Kelly’s point of the article is to say that robots will pave the way for a new technological world and their knowledge will only help us to reach success.
The change from only working with other people and paper documents to now with computer technology will soon move even further; have you thought about the fact that robots will soon be as common as computers are today? Some people will automatically be against the idea simply because change is hard to get used to; but need not fear the unknown because it’s going to be a positive change. Jobs will be looking for people who will easily adapt to working with robots and letting them help when needed. To come to terms with Baxter being created remember that years ago “robots” were made for picking fruit and vegetables, counting, and organizing things like money and warehouses.
In Kelly’s article he explains, “70 percent of today’s occupations will likewise be replaced by automation.” We are in a generation that is always after more, so he is saying that like years ago we evolved with machines, we will soon evolve even more with robots. On the other hand, there is an argument that even though robots are going to be better by helping us, they are still taking jobs away. It is a logical statement, but by the end of some jobs, new ones will be created.
Going back to the story I had about my experience with volunteering at a physical therapy clinic, the personal experience is what makes that job so special. Jobs where personal interaction and showing hospitality, because those are human qualities that robots can not take away. This means we will be moving away from the standard of
today.
Baxter robots are the smartest of their kind and are able to learn from humans much easier than ever; for example, you can simply redirect an arm instead of reprogramming like it was done in the past. Also, they are more aware of obstacles that come in the way of the robot; instead of running over something like in the past, robots like Baxter will sense what is in front of him and move around it. The intention of having Baxter is to do the jobs that humans can do, but they do better; and to do the impossible jobs only they can do. When this happens, they will be opening great opportunities for inventions and discoveries.
Kelly’s article is a great reminder of all the amazing technological success that has happened in the world. I support his belief that robots will be creating opportunities for newer and more exciting jobs and be nothing but helpful in society. We have waited many years for this exciting change in jobs and I know it will have an impact on my life in the future. How will it change your life?
