The story Bhakthi in the Water is a beautiful story. It eloquently describes how our identities are affected by our surroundings and our experiences. Bhakthi, Tarun, and Karen are all affected by the people that they interact with and the circumstances of their upbringing. I believe that the story Bhakthi in the Water should be featured in next year’s course reader because it gives deep insight into the identities of each character, showing how their individual identities are just reflections of the societies around them, enforcing the third EU.
Bhakthi is one of the characters that is most heavily affected by the people she interacts with, demonstrating the third EU. Her …show more content…
As a kid, she said, “I used to lisp … I got to be afraid to open my mouth, what with other kids laughing at me every time I tried. Kept myself closed in my room … then one day, I came home from school and saw a camera on my bed. Dad’s idea,”(168-169). This shows how her parents have affected her life because her father’s idea to give her a camera to explore the world around her has become one of the defining aspects of her, which exposes our identity as a construction and consequently demonstrates the third EU. Additionally her boyfriend has affected her personality, as Karen says, “I’ve decided I’m done with men. I’m much happier, you know, without,” (173). Karen is a very strong, independent female. She guides Bhakthi from a place of fear and reliance on others to being able to conquer those fears. This independence and strength originates from her boyfriend leaving her. Karen would be very dependent on her boyfriend if he hadn’t left her, causing a similarity between her and Bhakthi and ultimately not affecting or teaching Bhakthi at all.
Bhakthi in the Water is a story about growth and learning. Each character is shaped by the experiences that they have and the people they encounter. This supports the unit EU that states that identity is a construct of hybridity by exposing how these characters are defined by the interactions and challenges that we faced. For this reason, I believe that the story should remain in the course
