Victor Rios, the author of the book Punished focused on the struggles that Latino and African American young men ages 14-18 face when it comes to coping when all odds are against them. Rios (2011) establishes the phrase “Youth Control Complex” which he defines as “ a system in which schools, police, probation officers, families, community centers, the media, and other systems treat young people’s everyday behaviors as criminal activity” (XIV). The reality of these young men is that, all their societal systems are failing them. Teachers don’t care about teaching students, the criminal justice system is only waiting on them to walk the streets or seem “suspicious” for them to get arrested, friends “act bad” to gain respect amongst each other…

The earth has been affected by the natural hazards over a long time as man emerged into the picture that the natural occurrences were becoming disaster, together with being documented in various ways providing a warning for the future generation. Nature is our wise old teacher, if we are willing to observe, listen and learn both in happier times and in our responses to the powerful forces of nature that have the capacity to destroy us, there are lessons to be learnt. Two strong lessons emerge from India’s response to cyclone Phailin — when there is a will to do something, India has the competence, capability and resources.…

The term ‘disaster mitigation’ is variously understood by different people in different disciplines. The meaning of the word mitigate as “to mollify; to make easily borne; to temper’. Therefore one may consider mitigation action as if it will happen after the event. Various disasters like earthquake, landslides, volcanic eruptions, fires, flood and cyclones are natural hazards that kill thousands of people and destroy billions of dollars of habitat and property each year. The rapid growth of the world's population and its increased concentration often in hazardous environment has escalated both the frequency and severity of natural disasters.…

In December of 1984 there was an incident that lead to a gas leak in Bhopal, India that is referred to as the “Bhopal Gas Tragedy.” This gas leak is commonly referred to as one of the worst industrial disasters in history. The gas leak was at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) chemical plant in Bhopal, India. This chemical plant produced Sevin which is a pesticide that was commonly used throughout Asia [12]. Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) owned a little more than half the shares of the UCIL company at the time of the gas leak. The gas leak created a cloud of extremely toxic methyl isocyanate gas (MIC) and killed roughly 3,800 people [12]. Many people that were originally affected by the gas leak that are still living have given birth to…
