A general overview of the background, development, and content of the Old Testament
Course Credit
Three (3) hours credit
Course Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for BIB 110.
Course Rationale
BIB 110 is required of all students at Mississippi College to satisfy the undergraduate university core curriculum. The course is an introductory survey of the Old Testament preceded by introductory material necessary for understanding the nature of the Bible. The purpose of the course is to acquaint the student with the Old Testament and to increase appreciation for it as the record of God’s revelation of himself to humankind in Jesus Christ, and as great literature.
Course Objectives
Upon completing this course the student should be able to:
Present a panoramic view of the Old Testament; i.e., its purposes, authorship, theme, content, structure and scope, as well as its geographical, cultural, and historical setting
Trace the basic sequence of the periods of Israel’s national history as presented in the Old
Testament and explain how it serves as a foundation for the Old Testament
Identify major characters of the Old Testament, relating their choices to their successes and failures
Make application of Old Testament texts in personal formation and growth
Course Requirements
The student is expected to read each daily assignment in the course schedule of assignments. The student will complete three sectional exams as scheduled by the professor.
