During the time of Samuel, Judges ruled the people in Israel. The Israelites said to Samuel, “ You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” (APA, NIV, 1 Samuel 8:5) They desire a king because they thought the other nations having a man, as a leader will help them win their fight battles. Having a king would allow them to be lazy, and have someone else make all the calls and take on the burden of responsibilities they would have to deal with. The Israelites did not trust God’s judgment after the countless times he has provided for them. They wanted to be just like the other nations not knowing what God had in store for them. God being a favorable God give them what they wanted.

Israelites desperate for change, even though Samuel had warned them and they had prophet’s prophecies that a king had to be chosen from the tribe of Judan. The Israelites ignored every warning and choose Saul based on his outward appearance despise God’s works, “ Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (APA, NIV, 1 Samuel 16:7) Saul’s title as king did not last long for he began to make decisions on his own without God’s approval. He fought with the Philistines in the valley of Elah, went behind Samuel’s back and offered the sacrifice. Obedience is always better than sacrifice. Saul was rejected because he disobeyed God’s instructions to destroy the Amalekites and their possessions, as God had asked him to. Just like the Israelites were disobedient, Saul was also disobedient to the Lord’s words. Like the saying, “You attract who you are being.” The Israelites with Saul as their king lead them to their own destructions, if only they had been patient, obedient and trusted in God.
Saul’s disobedience lead to his rejection by God. He lost the blessings of God and David was display as the new king because he honored God and was a man after God’s own heart. God appointed David, juts as his word for a leader to be from the tribe of Judah and also gratifying the prophecies of the prophet. One thing that separates David from Saul was the fact that David was very obedient to God’s commands and loved the Lord. He didn’t have the many attributes of Saul’s physical appearance but David’s attributes of his faith in the Lord made him a much better king than Saul. David was able to capture Jerusalem, relocate the Ark of covenant to Jerusalem and defeated the enemies of Israel all with the help of God. He defeated Goliath, a giant with the faith of God. Compare to Saul, David gave thanks and glory to the Lord after every victory and distress, he was humble and fearful. He surpassed as king because he seek guidance from God. David honored God during his ruling as King, though he had his mishap by sinning when sent Uriah out to battle so he could sleep with his wife Bathsheba after seeing her bathing. He was still able to show repentance from his sins unlike Saul.
The sins of King Solomon were his love for foreign women, chasing after women and collecting thousands of women who didn’t favor God, turning away from God, building altars of false gods and worshipping them.
God seeing Solomon new found of love said to him, “Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.” (APA, KJV, 1 Kings 11:11) Before the sins of Solomon, he was obedient and God granted him wisdom to rule the people of Israel. God gave Solomon more than he asked for; he gave him riches and honor. With the newfound wisdom, he was able to build a temple in Jerusalem. His pride slowly overtook his growth in the Lord. Solomon ended up relying on his riches than the wisdom God had anointed on him, leading him to engage in ungodly activities. His disobedience leads to the weak monarchy in Israel resulting in the Kingdom being dived into a North and a South
Kingdom
The stories of Saul, David, and Solomon all have one theme in common which is obedience. These stories show how obeying God and following his commandments will lead to blessings, and being in the will of Him. It also shows that God is a forgiving God, and he always forgives our sins.
