Proverbs
Author: Solomon and others
Date: 950-700 BC
Key Word: Wisdom
Key Verse: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding”(9:10)
The book of proverbs is the words of wisdom. The Proverbs are wise saying that express deep truths in capsules form. (Ed Hindson and Elmer L. Towns, Illustrated Bible Survey, An Introduction, p.193). A proverb is a short poetic sentence conveying wisdom in a concise and memorable form. Wisdom is meant to be applied, not just studied or memorized. and thus certain guidelines prove helpful beyond the more discernment of poetic features.(Ed Hindson and Elmer L. Towns, Illustrated Bible Survey, An Introduction, p.196). First, Proverbs concentrates primarily on practical issues rather than focusing on theological issues. .(Ed Hindson and Elmer L. Towns, Illustrated Bible Survey, An Introduction, p.197).
Proverbs is filled with practical advice regarding principles of success (10:4-5), honesty (11:1), humility (11:2), and generosity (11:24). In many ways Proverbs serves as a teacher’s manual for teaching biblical principles of success, prosperity, and godly living. .(Ed Hindson and Elmer L. Towns, Illustrated Bible Survey, An Introduction, p.200).
The book of Proverbs emphasizes the fear of the Lord as the key to wisdom and knowledge. While Proverbs focuses on matters of earthly living, it reminds us that God is the ultimate source of truthe (2:5-6). .(Ed Hindson and Elmer L. Towns, Illustrated Bible Survey, An Introduction, p.200).
Job Scholars are not sure of the time period of the book of Job. Some say Job was born in 980. Job was a man in the land of Uz, and he was perfect and upright. Job was a man that feared God, and despised evil. Job was the greatest man of the east, he was blessed with seven sons and three daughters. Job was a very rich man, and he loved the Lord. Satan did not like the fact that Job was a righteous and God fearing man, and he told the Lord that the only reason why Job was so righteous was because he was so rich.
Satan asked God for permission to go to Job ,and put him to a test. God allowed Satan to do so because God knew that there was none like Job on earth. Satan came into Job life and took away all of his earthly possessions and all of his children. “Job arose and shaved his head and fell to the ground, and worshipped(1:20) and said, “Naked came I out of my Mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. (1:22). In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God …show more content…
foolishly. God allowed Satan to enflict Job with so much hurt and pain, but Job continued to hold on to God. Job curses the day of his birth (3:1-10) and quistions why God would allow him to be born if his only plan was to bring him to a place of such intense suffering (3:11-26). While still not accusing God of injustice, Job indicateds that he wishes he had died at birth. Job had three friends Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, they believed that Job’s suffering was because of some sin that Job had committed. Job still holds on to his coinfidence in God in spite of his friends criticism. Job is vindicated, and his health is restored to him. The three friends are condemned for their false accusations and misguided theology, and Job is called upon to serve as a Priest and pray on their behalf (42:7-9). As for Job restoration, God prospers him once again and bless him with twice the wealth he had prior to Satan’s challenge (42:10,12).
Bethlehem
Bethlehem (House of Bread - House of Lahmu) is located about 10 Kilometers (6 miles) southwest of Jerusalem by the hill country of Judea on the way to Hebron.
It is first mentioned in the Armana letters fourteen centuries BCE.
Bethlehem is sacred to all three religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Bethlehem plays a significant part in the Old Testament, in the history of the Israelites, both before they entered Egypt and slavery, and after the Exodus. It appears in the Old Testament as Ephrat, where Rachel the beloved matriarch of the Jewish People, the favorite wife of Jacob, died during childbirth. The Tomb of Rachel, is a pilgrimage place for Jews and Muslims alike. Among other Biblical mentions and Holy Sites in Bethlehem: Rachel 's tomb, Naomi and Ruth, Samuel anoints King David and the well from which David 's warriors brought him waters. In the bible it is called "Bethlehem of Judah" (belonging to the tribe of Judah), to distinguish it from the other Bethlehem, which was in the North in the territory of the
Zebulon.
David, the youngest son of a Bethlehem-farmer (a shepherd) is chosen and anointed by the Prophet Samuel on behalf of the Lord as a king. (First Samuel 17:12). According to Matthew 2 and Luke 2, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and Matthew interpreted this as the fulfillment of Micah 's prophecy. In effect it became a sort of official rightful place of the family line of David.(http://www.holylandnetwork.com/bethlehem/bethlehem.htm)
