To understand the true meaning of this letter we must look in the other passages that surround this one. In Corinthians 12:4-6 Paul clearly shows that the spiritual gifts that are being referred to are coming from the same unified God. In Corinthians 14:1-3 it is clearly identified by Paul that these gifts are to be used for the benefit of others and not for self greed. In this passage Paul says that love is patient and kind, love is not envious or boastful and love is not arrogant or rude. Because of the socially and racially diverse community within Corinth it becomes obvious through this passage that these attributes were not apparent at this time.
