The authority of the Bible is derived from its divine inspiration. God's word has authority over that of men or spirits. Scripture comes to us as the only rule of faith and life, and demands of all people, that it be believed and obeyed. All other forms of authority fall second to it.
The entire Scripture has this authority. "Scripture" and "Word of God" are names to us that mean the same thing. The whole Bible is the very Word of God.

Not all words and facts contained in Scripture, have legislative authority, that is applied as a rule for faith and life. Scripture even contains word of wicked people, even the devil. Scripture also describes sinful acts committed by His children, like for example the deception of Jacob. God included these words and deeds in Scripture not so we would follow them, but to warn us. However, they have historical authority, as these words and actions are delivered to us by the Holy Spirit and are therefore historically correct and reliable; relating to the words and deeds of God, they are also described as a lesson.
How do we achieve the recognition of the divine authority of Scripture? Not by scientific research. This can never prove the authenticity and credibility of the Scriptures, because what is known today as scientific evidence, will soon be rejected as untenable by other researchers.

What is the message of the Bible to the layman who does not suffer from all these different interpretations? I discovered that the Bible is the Word of God and contains very simple messages that everyone can understand. God is the beginning; He created all things; He is the present; He is the future. God created man to live on earth. It's not an easy life on earth. We are dealing with sin, poverty, diseases, pain, wars and death. Our life is a constant challenge. And yet God has given us hope. He gave us His only son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to cleanse us from our sins. And if we believe in Him and accept Him, we will share in His eternal life. With this new found faith we are born again and we receive the Holy Spirit to guide us. Our lives would then be filled with love. Love for God and love for one another.
