Biblical Principals of Healthy Sexuality

CNL 7643 Family Sexuality
John Brown University

Looking at the media and entertainment industry just over the past fifty or so year, it is very evident how much the view of healthy sexuality has changed throughout time in our society. Just 60 years old the public was horrified when Elvis Presley suggestively shook his hips and most television sitcoms were about a wholesome traditional family. Presently however; it is rare to see a music video without some kind of sexual reference, popular television networks HBO and Showtime show extremely graphic sexual scenes in their top rated shows, and the music charts are covered with sexually explicit songs, such as Bruno Mar’s “Your sex takes me to paradise.” In a society where sexual morality is continuing to diminish, Christians have the blessing of the Holy Bible in which the principals of healthy sexuality are from the Lord Jesus Christ and give a guide to follow when views of sexual morality are always changing. Sex is inherently God given. In Genesis 1:27-28 HCSB, scripture tells us that “God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it…” Furthermore, God created sex for not just procreation, but pleasure as well as can be seen in Proverbs 5:18-19 HCSB: “Let your fountain be blessed, and take pleasure in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful fawn--let her breasts always satisfy you; be lost in her love forever.” Notice that the Lord did not just say to take pleasure with any woman but with the wife of your youth. It is evident through many scriptures in the Bible that healthy sexuality is through marital sex. According to1 Corinthians 7:1-40 ESV: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality,

Verse 7:1b deals with sexual immorality. The idea that, “it is good for a man not to touch a woman” is key to understand 1 Corinthians because it lends support to the idea that some ascetic Christians were influencing the rest of the church to forgo all bodily pleasures. If the rest of 1 Corinthians 7 is analyzed under that assumption, then the rest of the rest of the chapter falls into place…

This paper shall be used as a response regarding sexual fulfillment within the confines of a biblically based marriage. It was based on information obtained from the book, “The Gift of Sex” by Clifford and Joyce Penner. The couple gave their opinion as well as discussed topics which were sexually explicit as it pertained to married couples. Couples that were seeking a more satisfying sexual relationship were most likely the intended targets. Topics that were discussed were; the bible and sex depicted towards man, the body which was created in order to perform sexual activities as well as keeping intimacy alive and interested within the marriage. There were also topics such as problems which have risen due to sexual dysfunction, birth control, couples which have benefited from sexual exercises as well as instructions which have been known to have provided an increased sexual agility. The authors recommended couples which have experienced sexual dysfunction within their marriages to seek Professional help when and if needed. Both authors discussed the use of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers as well as men and women of the cloth which have been known to have benefited couples that have dealt with sexual problems in the past.…

The Primary Precepts of Natural Law require us to ‘live in an ordered society’ to ‘reproduce’, to ‘educate our young’, to ‘protect the innocent’ and the most important to ‘worship God’. The most relevant of these in this subject is reproduction, and if you look at it as a duty to continue the re-population of God’s people than of course sex can be understood as a good and moral action. In fact there are many biblic references to sex and Gods opinion on it, in Genesis He says; ‘be fruitful and increase in number’ and through-out it shows that sex is necessary. The problem for a Natural Law supporter comes when sex is only done as an ‘efficient’ cause, e.g. for pleasure and enjoyment, this is not following God’s final cause of re-production.…

Based on Christian beliefs we are taught that sex is immoral and its temptation of the flesh. According to the article early Christians believed the same thing. Through the means of marriage is to encourage monogamy, and place parameters around sexuality. Through the years I have learned sex is a sin and one should wait till they are married. “Sexual abstinence was seen as a central and indispensable means of salvation and was achieved through contemplative withdrawal from the world.” (Sprague Sexuality & Religion). From reading this article I learned that compared to Christianity and Islamic religions that woman has more strict consequences when it comes to women who have sexual pleasure. When it comes to sexual pleasure in women in the Islamic world they are closely examined by men and women and it is believed that a sexual pleasured woman is said to be dangerous and out of self-control. Whereas early Christian beliefs it is immoral to have sexual pleasure whether you’re a man or woman. Sexuality in…

I grew up a Christian and certain high values were set my siblings and I, so high that moral values are predictable to assume on the subject of sex. Although I possess a European background my parents are primarily German-American. My siblings and I were with the ideas of spirituality is more important than religious views. However, this does not mean that we did not have set restrictions; never feeling shame or perfect knowledge of sexuality. That is why when wrapping up the last chapter of the text I realized that my sexual decisions were a positive influence and my family as-well-as myself.…

When discussing the “XXX” industry, otherwise known as pornography or the adult film industry, people tend to discuss it in hushed tones, or rather not discuss it much at all. When it comes to sex in general, America generally is uncomfortable talking about sex and topics related to it. It should come as no surprise that the porn industry is treated in a similar fashion. Pornography, according to Sullivan, was considered “sexually 'explicit' writings, still or motion pictures and similar products designed to be sexually arousing,” (Sullivan, 2012, pg.321).…

    Jewish Sexual Ethics

Sexually ethical conduct is essential as it promotes behaviour that is respectful, consensual, faithful, morally correct and righteous. Sexually ethical conduct provides Judaism with moral framework for procreation, fidelity and the ability to maintain faith. Adultery is the most valued sexual ethical teaching in Judaism because it breaks the covenant made between Abraham and Moses and defies the principle beliefs of love and fidelity. Adultery directly defies the Jewish belief of love, commitment and the sacred institution of marriage and is immoral because it put in jeopardy the family unit which disintegrates love between partners and inturn breaks honest and trust. In addition to this, as monotheists, Jews believe in fidelity and procreation and adultery damages and destabilises the social framework for Jewish conduct thus providing behaviour that is evil and unethical. The universal condemnation of adultery by Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Liberal Jews indicates that adultery is…

Throughout the first few pages of Margaret A. Farley’s book “A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics” she references the differences in understanding of sexual ethics between Ancient Greeks and today’s modern society. Farley tells us that although we are seemingly following the same set of Christian sexual ethics as the Ancient Greeks, our modern society has reconstituted these guidelines to meet several different frames and needs of understanding.…

    Heterosexual Privilege

The problem is that there is no “natural” sex. That is not to say that sex is “unnatural.” Rather, that sexual orientation is not innate and does not “come naturally.” We are not born heterosexual or homosexual. Sexuality is a learned social construct. Social constructionism is the theoretic perspective which argues that our perception of what is real is defined only by the meaning that we attribute to given situation ([Berger and Luckman 1967; Blumer 1969] “Doing It: The Social Construction of S-E-X,” Tracey L. Steele). But because we live in an organized bureaucratic society that insists on assigning “normal/not normal” meaning to sexuality, heterosexuality is normal and any other sexuality is deviant.…

    Double Sstandard

The perception that a double standard exists between men and women, with regard to matters sexual in nature, is our topic of study. The World Book dictionary defines a double standard as principles applied more leniently to one group than another. A sexual double standard asserts that “men have greater sexual freedom than women, and that society accepts and tolerates from men certain sexual behaviors, such as premarital and extramarital sex, that it does not from women” (Gentry 1998: 505). Many researchers have studied this topic from a variety of viewpoints. For example, the idea that desiring sexuality is positively regarded in men, but denigrated and regulated by negative labeling in women was assessed in one study in New Zealand ( Jackson and Cram 2003: 115). Some studies take a sociobiological approach in examining differences in sexual arousal to sexual stimuli. In one study, the assumption was that women were less responsive than men to sexual stimuli (Murnen and Stockton 1997: 135). In another, the assumption was that men are designed to be stimulated visually, while women are designed to be stimulated in a more auditory and tactile manner (Malamuth 1996: 8). A more lighthearted approach to a sexual double standard was taken in a study done in Texas examining country music lyrics. All of the songs used were sung by female artists. Interestingly, these researchers found that female singers excused infidelity from married women but not married men. However, the view that only men have sexual relations before marriage or outside of it was accepted by men but rejected by women. Overall, though, the lyrics supported traditional gender roles and restrictions (Chandler and Chalfant 1985: 155). Mary Vause from the University of Virginia examined what appeared to be the taboo topic of women and masturbation. Masturbation was a subject of major confusion to girls, Vause found. She attributed this confusion to “ a shocking double standard”…
