The hindbrain causes people to remain alert; look, listen, smell, and sense sounds. The forebrain houses the cerebral cortex and performs as the highest function of abstract thought and language, taking in information, analyzing and interpreting etc. The midbrain has the limbic system within it, which is the area that monitors our emotions.
