Scholes, Robert. “Hope in Memory in My Ántonia.” Bloom’s Modern Critical Interpretations: My Ántonia, Ed. Harold Bloom. New York: Infobase Publishing, 1987. 31-35. (#18 a selection from an anthropology)

In this article by Robert Scholes, it talks about the hope and memory in My Antonia. He says the characters find themselves by looking back at the past. He said “we are reminded of this past constantly: by the Bohemian customs and culinary practices of the Shimerdas; by the observations of Otto Fuch on the relationship of Austrians and Bohemians I the old country; and especially by the Catholic religion of the Bohemians, which is their strongest link with the past, and which serves to bind them together and to separate them from the protestant society of their adopted and…Antonia cherishes her connection with the past” it talks about the characters and their past and how it has impacted their lives. I will use this to tie back into my thesis because this is basically what my whole paper is about. My paper based on the character’s past and how it impacts them later in life. The article talks a lot of the past memories that I can use in my research paper.

This article analyzes My Antonia and it’s theme of memory and how it haunts some of the characters. It talks about the story of the wolves and how its haunted Peter and Pavel and how that brings gothic to the story. It also tells why Cather included some of the memories that she did in the novel. It tells the importance of those memories to the characters. I will talk about the memories it mentions and how they are important to the story and to the characters lives. Their past is what makes them who they

My Antonia, a realistic fiction novel written by Willa Cather, tells the story of a boy named Jim, who meets a young lady named Antonia Shimerda whom, though she had many trials, goes through life happy, and eventually becomes a successful mother. Antonia dealt with numerous hardships, as she was becoming an adult. She experienced a trip from Bohemia to America, the death of somebody close to her, was almost rapped, and many more destitutions. But, even though Antonia was faced with multiple challenges, she continued being happy. The troubles that Antonia experienced are similar to that of an immigrant. Immigrants are forced to deal with a multitude of injustices and trials, relatable to Antonia. Antonia strongly relates to the major theme of immigration because she shares many of the same experiences of a stereotypical immigrant.…

    Similes In My Antonia

Cather uses different kind of languages, from metaphors to similes to detailed description and more. One of the similes that stood out was, “The earth itself, as if the shaggy grass were sort of loose hide.” It is an unusual comparison because grass cannot be shaggy; a dog can. I thought the metaphor in the same sentence was very interesting. She said, “Underneath it herds of wild buffalo were galloping, galloping,” which suggested that wild buffalo were galloping under the hills.…

A character’s past is important in any work; whether it be a play, a movie, or a novel, the past is often influential in many ways. It shaped the characters into who they are now, whether that be a good or bad thing. Often something from the past often fuels them to a future goal. In The Bone People by Keri Hulme, the past plays a major part in Kerewin Holmes life, how she feels about it, and how she looks back on it plays a better part of the novel.…

Willa Cather has long been known for her extraordinary short stories, poems, books and more, specifically, she is known as a romantic realist. The term romantic realist in and of itself is relatively controversial, as the two terms are generally thought of as antonyms. In Cather’s life, this description is very appropriate, as she lived through both the realism and realist periods. The combination of hardships Cather experienced, and the transition from the romantic period to the realist period, shaped her into the realist author she is known as today.…

    Beloved Essay

In the novel Beloved, Toni Morrison delves into not only her characters' painful pasts, but also the painful past of the injustice of slavery. Few authors can invoke the heart-wrenching imagery and feelings that Toni Morrison can in her novels, and her novel Beloved is a prime example of this. Toni Morrison writes in such a way that her readers, along with her characters, find themselves tangled and struggling in a web of history, pain, truth, suffering, and the past. While many of Toni Morrison's novels deal with aspects of her characters' past lives and their struggles with how to embrace or reject their memories, Beloved is a novel in which the past plays an exceptionally important role. Most often, it is Beloved's main character Sethe whose relationship to the past is examined through her murdered daughter Beloved. However, Paul D's painful past and memories are intricately linked to both Sethe and Beloved and should be examined as well. Paul D's very conscious struggles to suppress his past are represented through a prominent, reoccurring symbol in Morrison's text, and are also mediated through his contact with Sethe's life and past as well as through story telling.…
