Big Baby Boom Research Paper
The Big Baby Boom In 1945, World War II came to an end and the soldiers returned to their homes in America. The young men began to get jobs, find partners and marry, and start a family with them. This had all happened during the same time and caused birth rates in America to sky rocket. Over 76 million babies were born between 1946 and 1964 and this generation is known as the “Baby Boomers.” According to author Paula Schleis, “They have lived through at least six decades, straddling two centuries and two millenia” (Schleis). This means that they have lived through many big and important events in history and some even took part in those historical events. This generation of babies makes up nearly twenty-five percent of today's U.S population …show more content…
Some people from this specific generation say that the worst thing about being a baby boomer is their age. They are starting to age more and more each day and experience things that they have never dealt with before like arthritis, aches and pains, wrinkles, and more health issues. Because of this, many people born during the baby boom exercise and eat healthy to stay young looking and competitive in the work force. Also, most anti-aging beauty products and gym memberships are sold to more elderly people because of this reason. But that is not enough for some, some people even go to the extreme and get surgery done to keep their faces looking young and healthy. Dr Roy David states “Facelift and eyelid surgery remain some of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States” (Marketwired “Baby”). In 2014, over 500,000 facial surgeries were performed. Many procedures that were done, were performed on men surprisingly. In fact, 20 percent of surgeries done are on men compared to only 10 percent about a decade ago (Marketwired “Baby”). Older men often get hair transplants done because they are insecure about their balding but women also get hairline transplants too due to the thinning of hair in the front. It is known that after healing, people would never know that someone got work done and they would be ready to return to the work force looking young as …show more content…
They contributed to many big factors in this society like today’s education, rights, and careers. Even though the people that do believe that the baby boom generation had it easier, have some valid reasons, most of them do not have evidence to support it. They have worked hard to build what society enjoys today. In the near future, if society does not appreciate the contributions that baby boomers have provided, people may not realize how easy they have it and will take advantage of what was built for them. Society should appreciate what the baby boomers have done and see how much they have

The Baby Boomers as Twenge describes, in the 1970’s were the first real generation to truly focus on “meaning and self-fulfillment”. Despite that this is true, Twenge makes the argument that the boomers are not in fact the “real” Generation Me because they were not born into a world with these ideologies, but instead later explored it. In addition to this, the boomers generally did most things in groups and not on their own and therefore, are not considered to be Generation Me. Twenge then compares the two generations and how the two groups differentiate. The reader is able to see how being born into an environment where you are raised with the ideas of having to have high self-esteem leads to entitlement more self-absorbed people (GenMe) versus trying to fulfill oneself on ones own.…

Baby boomers are classified as the generation, born after the depression in the 1930's, where soldiers returning from the war found that life was much easier in Canada. There were more jobs and houses were easily acquired. Because of the prosperous time, people were able to have large families and to support them. These boomers caused a large population growth in Canada, and because of their sheer numbers, they have played a major role in the changes of social structures in Canada, namely in finance, family, work ethic and popular culture. However, these changes may not have been suitable for the generation after the Boomers: Generation X. They seem to be having a difficult time adjusting to the structure of society with the same level of tenure as their parents, the Boomers.…

Landon Jones once said, "the cry of the baby was heard across the land" (Baby Boomer-History Channel). This quote refers to the post World War II era, the beginning of the baby boom, where millions of babies were born between 1946-1964. By 1964 this new generation made up almost 40% of the nation's population. Baby Boomers grew up in a suburban lifestyle and were constantly surrounded by material culture, but by their teenage years they began to resist consumerism and suburban ethos. The baby boomers "began to fight for social, economic and political equality for disadvantaged groups....and some dropped out of political life altogether" (Baby Boomers-History Channel). This resistance from the baby boomers began the counterculture of the 1960s.…

During the Great Depression the marriage rate fell as uncertainty over economic conditions caused people to postpone decisions that would significantly affect their lives. Birthrates also dropped: pessimism shrouded Americans' expectations of a promising future for themselves and their children. After World War II ended, however, prospects seemed considerably brighter. Young Americans returned home from war in 1945 ready to reap the benefits of victory and a prospering economy. Accordingly, there were almost 2.3 million marriages in 1946, an increase of more than six hundred thousand over the previous year. Many of these newlyweds had children within a year: a record 3.8 million babies were born in 1947. This was the first year of the baby boom, which lasted for most of the 1950s. Between 1948 and 1953 more babies were born than had been over the previous thirty years. In 1954 a record birthrate, a low death rate, and an influx of 144,000 immigrants created the largest one-year population gain in U.S. history. (Thomson Gale)…
