Founded in 1997, Subhiksha had grown from one store in 1997 to more than 1000 retail outlets in 2008. It sold FMCG, grocery, pharmacy, mobile products, and fruits and vegetables (F&V). It was the largest supermarket and mobile retail chain in India with presence in 90 cities. Although organized retail was identified as a high-growth area by the middle of 2008, players had realized that organized retail in India was going to be tough business. Various players (Reliance, Bharti, Birla, and the Future Group) were experimenting with different formats and models. Subhiksha decided to come up with its own model, which in its view was suitable to the Indian context. Subhiksha targeted the middle and lower classes, not the high-end customers. IT operated with an everyday low pricing model and located several smaller stores closer to customers who lacked markets nearby. At the operational level, the company constantly increased the supply chain process efficiency to deliver goods at low prices. The Subhiksha business model is explained through a detailed description of operations of a store (Indiranagar) located in Bangalore. It also describes operations of the distribution center that served the Indiranagar store as well as 58 other stores. The case discusses the challenges of organized retail in general and specific challenges of inventory and cost management for a discount retailer. It also provides detailed data that can be used for the diagnosis of the supply chain system at Subhiksha.…

“Subhiksha is a retail chain built on a unique business model with no frill stores in the neighbourhood area offering 8-10 per cent discount on Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on all products sold throughout the year. Promoted by R Subramanian, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Subhiksha has been the pioneer in the organised discount retail model in India. The company seeks to provide a one-stop shop for all daily shopping needs of a consumer and sells FMCG products, food and groceries, pharmacy products and mobiles. With strong backward linkages and carefully crafted supply chain arrangements, the business model is built such that consumers will benefit hugely from the constant everyday low prices, along with the convenience of neighbourhood shopping that they are used to. The Company started its operations in 2000 in Tamilnadu and has rapidly scaled up its presence in New Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. By 2007-08, Subhiksha plans to be a pan-India retailer with at least 1,000 stores operational.”…

The Gerrard India Bazaar in Toronto provides an array of Indian restaurants and grocery shopping locations along Gerrard Street. I noticed an Indian grocery store called, Kohinoor Foods, which seemed to be a popular place for Indian people to shop for foods. Before I entered, I saw many stands with large crates full of vegetables and fruits being sold. In this manner, I got the “feel” of being at an Indian Bazaar due to many of the items being sold on the street, much like they do in urban areas in India. The red banner above the store’s entrance seemed pretty large, so I decided to enter and explore the various food items and the people that shopped within the establishment. After entering,…
