”Big Brother isn’t watching you”, Russell Brand
In 2011 videos and reports about riots vandalizing the streets of London wandered through the Internet and the media to all parts of the world. Everybody’s eyes were on Britain. Especially it was big in Europe. Not one day passed without new pictures, new stories and new tragedies. But riots aren’t something new in the 21st century. Almost daily, both before and after the 2011 UK riots, riots and conflicts between civilians and authority occur across the world. Particularly the Middle East and northern Africa have been characterized with riots, conflicts and violence. England wasn’t even the first European country to witness its own people going berserk. Greece and other southern European country, had at this time already dealt with the rage of civilians a lot of times. I think what made the UK riots so shocking to the world, was the fact that this took place in the UK, a former empire and today one of the most developed and modern countries. If riots as these could happen in London, it could happen everywhere. That’s why it is so important for us to figure out why it did happen. Are these rioters just mindless people with no greater desire than destroying their own communities?
