Big Girl Monologue
30 minutes ago our horse named "Big Girl" was having a nice day. Grazing the green field grasses.... as though it was a free infinite smorgasbord. Conversing with her neighbor stallion across the street. Joyful for the windy day to keep the flies away.

Until I brought her in for the day. Meet Senorita Diablo....

Here at the farm we have three horses. Sony Boy, Sugar, and Big Girl. Two were brought in from a local rescue. Sugar we bought off a lady from the Chico area...that's an hour or so from Rio Linda. Sugar was older.....and we just thought that he needed a good home. So he went home with us that day. I believe that Sugar knew he was heading for a better life......and that he was right about.

I have always love horses, and as a little girl one of my favorite movies was Spirit: a movie set in the 1800s about a wild mustang who is captured by the U.S army and embarks on a long journey back home to his family. I loved this movie not only because of the many horses, but also because I related with Spirit’s struggles. When I was very young my parents got divorced and my dad won custody of my little sister and I. At that young age I felt like I lost my mother because even though I still got to talk to her on the phone, I missed her arms around me when I was sad and that special relationships mothers and daughters share. Spirit lost his mom when he was captured and so I felt like he understood me.…

Pretend for a moment that humans of the present era are horses of the mid- to late 1800s. Horses are prideful, strong, and majestic creatures that have very few predators lurking over them. Horses have worked hard at their jobs for a long time. They pull heavy carts, race for entertainment, and make long journeys with ease, all for the sake of three square meals a day and an early retirement. The end of the 19th century comes near and horses are starting to see changes happening all around them.…

The smell of the crisp fresh air, the little whinny of the horses from the barn munching down their grain; another beautiful day at the barn. But then something unexpected; turning a corner six little heads turn to look at the stranger walking by. New foals, with their fuzzy little coats and spiky manes. Five were brown and one gray, their eyes glowing with curiosity. But something was wrong-- they had no mother. Curious, I was quick to find the answer; they had been abandoned, left to die. Quietly I slipped into the pen of theses foals. they were skittish at first, not quite sure if they could trust me. It was then I noticed the lack of fur and goopy eyes. These little babies were suffering with an assortment of issues, mental and physical. These small creatures were the byproduct of the racehorse breeding industry.…

Everyday I go to the barn at four o'clock to bring in our horses, give them grain, hay, and water. The chores at night would take about an hour maybe a little while longer, but they quickly taught me to be responsible. While brining in the horses sounds easy, thats not always the case. At one point while I was bringing in my first horse I looked down at the legs and everything seemed to be fine. No cuts, no scrapes, and the horse was walking how he should be. I hear a loud noise coming from down the hall. The horse I was learning and myself jumped out of out skin. I quickly ran and put my horse in a random stall. I slammed the door and here comes a horse running loose down the isle. I turn around and throw my hands in the air. “Wooooo” I shouted sternly. The horse comes to a sudden halt. I grabbed the horse and walked him back towards his stall. This wasn't unusual, sometimes horses escape when you open the gate to grab a different horse. As I am walking this now wired horse back to his stall I hear a small should coming from out side.…

Hanna would bring Lefty and I would bring my lesson horse, which is actually the horse I own now. It was incredible to see her out in the arena doing her thing. She knew everyone at the fairgrounds, the people who checked you in, the competition and the announcers. Not only did Hanna know everyone, everyone knew her. She was definitely more skilled in barrel racing and gaming than anything, she was the high point winner at the end of the year banquet. She won so many plaques and I just sat and hoped that one day that could be me. Going to the barn on weekends and seeing and watching her train horses was the highlight of my week. One spring she had about four horses in for training and she asked me to help! I was so excited as you could imagine. She had me get on a regular lesson horse and practice emergency dismounts at each gait before getting on a green horse. Together, we did lots of groundwork to show me the right way to do things and then I would go and do it on my own. Grace was the first horse that she had me help train. She was a little Chestnut Arab that was afraid of just about everything. I did so much work with her and then a few months later she went home, like a completely different…
