encounter many creatures and face many obstacles. As Bilbo gets farther from his house he gets gloomy. As the journey continues Bilbo meets a creature named Gollum where he finds a ring that makes him invisible. He uses the ring when they arrive to Smaug’s cave to steals a cup. This makes Smaug mad, so he makes Esgaroth, which is a city, his victim. To stop all this commotion a brave man named Bard challenges Smaug and ends up killing him. After that Bard is offered to be the king but he declines the offer. Further more, Bilbo gets hit by a rock and regains consciousness , but when he gets up he goes back to Hobbition with Gandalf where they think he is dead.
The protagonist of “The Hobbit” is a very well-to-do hobbit named Bilbo Baggins (Tolkien 4). Bilbo Baggins is a small, beardless hobbit, with hairy feet (Tolkien 4). Some personality traits that Bilbo posses are that he is brave, kind hearted, and a homebody. Bilbo can be considered brave because he went on the quest knowing that he can die. Bilbo is kind heart due to when he left all the dwarfs in this house that were uninvited, and gave them food. Bilbo is also a homebody because he didn’t want to leave his house to go to the adventure.
The hobbit had many scenes that were memorable, but the scene that is most memorable to me is when Bilbo gets caught trying to steal the purse from one of the huge trolls sitting around the fire.
This was the most memorable scene to me because I enjoyed the back and forth quarrels between the trolls and Bilbo. I also enjoyed how Bilbo would contradict himself and how that got the trolls confused.
Throughout the book I discovered two weaknesses which where that the plot was too easy to understand, and the main part of the story that was the fight against smaug the fearsome dragon was not detailed enough. In order to make the weaknesses better the author should have made the story more detailed, and also should have focused more on the main part of the story.
All through the story I came across many well written passages but the one that caught my attention was “Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning: or that it is a morning to be good on?” (Tolkien 6)I found this passage well written because the way the author worded the passage made the reader think that they are apart of the
story.
“The hobbit” is not a book for anyone to read. It is the book for readers that like adventure and action packed stories. In order to read this book the reader should be able to think of what may happen next. Overall the hobbit is an amazing book and I give it four stars out of five. I give it four stars because there where some parts that could have been better but it was an interesting book.
