Bildungsroman In The Man Who Was Almost A Man
Coming-of-Age Narratives Throughout Different Movements Bildungsroman is the term used to refer to a literary work that exemplifies a character’s formative years. Also known as a coming-of-age narrative, this form of work expresses one’s growth in moral education and maturity. Bildungsroman has been a fundamental objective of literature dating back to the start of authors and their participation in this artistic form of literary expression. American literature after 1865 contains several works that are predominant to the idea of expressing a character’s transition from childhood to adulthood. “A White Heron” by Sarah Jewett, “The Man Who Was Almost A Man” by Richard Wright, and “No Name Woman” by Maxine Kingston each take part in expressing …show more content…
This story exemplifies a young boy’s growth in moral education, as well as, his realization that there are consequences for his actions. Wright uses the title to foreshadow the bildungsroman theme in the story. Although the story strongly exemplifies a coming-of-age narrative, it also portrays a sort of coming-of-(r)age. Dave, the main character, is exhausted with society treating him like a child. “One of these day he was going to get a gun and practice shooting, then they couldn’t talk to him as though he were a little boy.”(1062) He believes that by purchasing a gun than he will be respected as a man. “Could kill a man with a gun like this. Kill anybody, black or white. And if I were holding his gun in his hand nobody could run over him; they would have to respect him.” (1065) After purchasing the gun, he hides it from his mother and lies to her about the gun’s whereabouts. This exemplifies only a fraction of his childish behavior. Dave then carries the gun with him as he goes to work for Mr. Hawkins in the field. While playing with the dangerous weapon, he fires the gun and it wounds one of Mr. Hawkins’s mules. When Mr. Hawkins learns about what Dave has done, he approaches Dave with an agreement on how Dave may repay him for killing his mule. “No Name Woman” is a work of literature that tells about Kingston’s upcoming in the Chinese-American culture. The core of the story is about a story that Kingston’s mother is telling her about her aunt. “In China, your father had a sister who killed herself… We say that your father has all brothers because it is as if she had never been born.”(1507) Kingston continued to listen to her mother explain that her aunt was pregnant and accused of adultery because her husband had been away for some time. Kingston’s mother tells her this story solely to teach her a lesson about the responsibilities of becoming a woman. “Don’t let your father know that I told you. He denies her. Now that you have started to menstruate, what happened to her could happen to you.” Kingston’s family wants her to participate in the punishment of her aunt; however, she interprets the story as a different lesson. She relates to her aunt because, like Kingston, her aunt did not want to conform to norms of society. Kingston relates to the spiteful acts of her aunt. She feels that in order for her to understand the moral of the story, then her aunts life must branch into her own. Kingston interprets her own judgement of her aunt. His family and everybody around him live similar lives and that it working on a farm day in and day out and not seeing any profits. I feel Dave is humiliated with the life he lives and is sick of how he appears to society.
