Bilingual Advantage Chapter Summary
Rebecca M. Callahan and Patricia C. Gándara’s 2014 edited volume The Bilingual Advantage: Language, Literacy and the US Labor Market, aims to examine the economic and employment benefits of bilingualism in the era of globalization. By presenting 12 recent studies that initiate a discourse of interdisciplinary perspectives, this four-section volume demonstrates the overall positive but evidently complex economic effects of bilingualism. The contributors’ exploration of the role of bilingualism in the US economy provides readers with a critical examination of historical patterns as well as a blueprint of bilinguals’ socioeconomic participation in the future. In Chapter 9, Santibañez and Záratea find a positive correlation between being bilingual and the odds of going to college, which strengthens the previous discussion about bilingual advantages in the job market (Chapter 7) and educational institutions (Chapter 8). Specifically, this study suggests Spanish-English bilinguals who frequently use their native language at home are likely to have more linguistic and human capital advantage than those who do not, thereby accusing linguistic assimilation of reducing such benefits in the long run. In Chapter 10, Porras and colleagues’ analyses support the prior findings that bilingualism aid in job seeking and advancement by obtaining both quantitative and qualitative data from stakeholders. Although their results do not show that bilingual employees receive more income, bilinguals’ economic benefits often appear in the hiring process.     I agree with Rodriguez that your heritage will forever remain your identity but it is possible to have multiple identities in a sense of becoming accustomed to wherever you are. You can embrace your new profound identity and in a sense of individualism in order to succeed in life. Bilingual education to me is important because not only does it teach you to speak a universal language in America but also teaches you societal norms. Reason being is that once you’ve learned the proper language, mannerism, and culture you can choose to be the person you want to be. According to a writer at Kars4kids, which is an educational blog for parents, Merle Huerta suggests that “Bilingual education makes kids more adaptable and flexible in a changing environment.” (Huerta). With that being said, being bilingual can have adaptive benefits. The improvements in the cognitive and sensory process from bilingual experience may help students or anyone learning English to better process information in the environment. Furthermore, bilingual education can help train the brain by learning and inhibiting a new language which allows bilingual people to access newly learned vocabulary. In addition to benefits of Bilingual education Matthew Lynch, who is an author of The Call to Teach and editor of The Edvocate, states in his article that bilingual education, “helps remove international language barriers.” (Lynch). Lynch argues that bilingual education has cultural benefits to people learning two languages together. People who come from households that have English as a primary language can lend their language expertise to friends from Spanish-speaking homes, and vice versa.     The United States is a diverse country of many different races and languages. Even though many languages are spoken in the United States, English is the preferred language in the United States. Speaking English in America is the key to success. Without English, acquiring employment is almost impossible. More and more immigrants are attracted to the U.S every year, and the populations of immigrants, which do not know the American culture, continue to rise. This population must be assimilated into the United States in order for the population to find employment and function in the United States. Assimilation is the process by which an outsider becomes part of a new community by adopting its language and customs. Public schools are a vital place where the country’s customs, language, and culture, in general, can be taught. According to Ginsburg, ever since the 1960’s young immigrants and U.S born children, of immigrant parents, were sent to public schools with little to no understanding of the English language. These students were forced to “sink or swim.” The public school offered no help to LEP students. LEP (limited English proficiency) is term used to describe students whose level English language is low. As a result, many of these students began to drop out, but finally in 1968, the federal government passed the Bilingual Act which paid special attention to students whose native language was not English. This provided special funding to create and maintain bilingual education programs. The goal bilingual education is to teach English more efficiently to students, with low English proficiency, protect students’ self-esteem, increase their academic performance, and lowering dropout rates.
